*remember you're algebra - simply put: if you change both sides of an equation by the same factor (whether subtracting, adding, multiplying, dividing, power, etc) then the new equations will be equal..

a = b
a^2 = a*b
a^2 - b^2 = a*b - b^2
(a+b)*(a-b) = b(a-b)
(a+b) = b
a+a = a
2a = a
2 = 1

so does 2 really equal 1, or what's wrong here?

so no, 2 doesn't = 1. 2*0 = 1*0 though :)

I'm going to replace every B with A, as they are equal to show what I think is wrong. I'm legitimately intrigued.

a^2 = a*a .......................(correct, a^2 = a^2)
a^2 - a^2 = a*a - a^2 ......(correct, 0 = 0)
(a+a)*(a-a) = a(a-a)...........(correct but strange, 2a*0 = a*0)
(a+a) = a...........................(why can 2a now = a)
a+a = a..............................(why can 2a now = a)
2=1....................................(ugh.)


if a=a is correct, and a+a = a is correct, then a (and therefore b) must be zero. So iff a = 0, the problem is correct, otherwise I think its invalid.
