Humm who was it that was run off by Lous dad for buying a Civic as a DD? I remember the "I can still smell the ships burning at Pearl Harbor" line. We still bring that up.

I wouldn't be afraid to let my kid walk half a block away in my neighborhood. Depends on the neighborhood really. When I lived in my old neighborhood I would let my son walk the whole patch with his friends by theirselves. Once he was 9. Seems old enough to start trusting them. But like I said, depends on the neighborhood.
