    Chrysler selling viper

    September 5th, 2008
Viper may speed past Hummer–on the block

    It’s fast, it’s mean, and it’s sexy.

With a base price of nearly $90,000, it happens to be the priciest model in Chrysler’s otherwise quotidian product line-up.

    Now it’s up for auction.

At a time when General Motors is trying to sell the Hummer SUV line – and not getting very far – it must take courage to put something on the block.

But unlike the lumbering, gas guzzling Hummer line, Viper may not be such a tough sell.

Unlike a Hummer, the Viper is not designed for off-road use. It’s no paragon of fuel-efficiency either, but it gives you a unique, luxurious handcrafted vehicle.

Another difference: Hummer’s sales plunged 40 percent in the first half of this year. Viper’s sales have risen 111 percent so far. Okay, that exorbitant rise is mainly due to a weak comparison — Viper’s 2007 sales had plunged amid a transition to a new model. But sales of Viper, like most cars in the high-end category, are not as affected by the macroeconomic factors that hurt vehicles sales (gas prices, interest rates, housing market). Sales of Hummer, which gives you 9 to 14 miles a gallon in fuel (in)efficiency are severely dependent on oil prices.

So Viper sales are likely to stay stable.

Moreover, it’s a much smaller asset than Hummer. Analysts have said it will likely fetch $100 million. (Yes, it’s a small deal but any move the U.S. automakers make in these turbulent times is being closely watched. )

Unlike Hummer, which is likely to be sold for much less than it’s worth, the Viper business will appeal to a whole host of investors because we aren’t talking billions of dollars. The Indian automakers, Chinese automakers, Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds or a wealthy entrepreneur — can all afford it. Easily.

Chrysler, majority-owned by Cerberus Capital Management, has faced scrutiny over its ability to ride out a downturn in U.S. auto sales that many analysts expect will stretch through 2009. It lost $1.6 billion in 2007. Selling brands and models it can do without is crucial to its survival and eventual health.

Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli has said last week the automaker has heard from several potential suitors, but he’s not naming names.

A steep downturn in auto sales is finally forcing the Big Three to take a harder look at their businesses and start getting rid of assets to shore up cash and cut costs. How successful any of these sales will be remains to be seen. But Viper is certainly likely to be an easier — and quicker — sale than Hummer

What a bunch of crap. I rather see the Viper go down in flames than be sold off, yet they are torally revamping their truck lines which aren't selling anymore and don't have a decent compact car anymore. what a great idea!

Kinda stupid really as it really isn't a Viper anymore. What they gonna do continue to supply all the aparts and build these for whomever buys it?

The entire Hummer line of GM was stupid from day one.

100 million seems like chump change to Chrysler. And another American product goes overseas. WTF.

I think all the american autos are gone soon. My opinion is GM sells and Ford will prob go under or be sold off in parts. As far as Hummer goes I am glad GM is selling it but I have an H1 and H2 and I would buy nothing else. I used to be big into Fords but the power joke turned me off.

I hope China doesn't start making the Viper, nobody will survive a wreck in one if they do.

    Evidence:

My company has an engineering office in China, and honestly, they are hard workers, but all they know how to do is cut corners. Unfortunately, in the process, they make some very ugly and/or dangerous things, lol

I have to un-do their hackery of my designs constantly, it gets old.

Shelby was one of the main reasons for the Viper in the first place. I rather see them get all rights to it.

Great - If Shelby buys Viper, then he can sue anyone who tries to make a Viper-like car 20 years from now, just like he did with the Cobra kit makers. He's a jackass in my eyes...

I don't look at it like that at all ... IMO he's simply protecting his brand and the value of his customer's vehicles.

I think the Hummers are a Joke especially the H2 and H3 they are just a tahoe frame with an expensive overweight ugly body. My Trailblazer would probably do as good as them offroad.

Sorry, but I disagree - Mustang Shelby clones in no way devalue the original Shelby Mustangs, and the same is true of the original Cobras. Shelby took a roadster body from a company that was going under, and dropped in an engine and transmission he didn't design. Basically it was a little brainstorming and minimal fabrication on bodies/parts that were at his disposal. For him to lay claim to the Cobra is ridiculous to me. He let 30+ years go by from the time he stopped making the original Cobras, and once he saw that the replica companies were actually beginning to turn a profit, he sued them for design infringement and use of a name "Cobra" that he hadn't put on a car since the 60's. This coincided with the startup of his own continuation Cobra manufacturing. I suppose the suit was legal, but it sure left a bad taste in my mouth. If it weren't for the kit/replica companies, 99% of us would have never seen what a Cobra actually looks like, let alone be able to afford one. And the sad part is that the kit cars, such as those made by Factory Five Racing, are better-designed and more capable than the originals they copied.

Shelby has turned into a bitter old man and a puppet for his lawyers. He can't seem to get along with anyone. Heck - he just "settled" his lawsuit against SAAC - the very club that pays the highest degree of respect and dedication to the cars he "created." Granted, the guy ( Rick Kopec ) who runs SAAC, which I was told is a for-profit enterprise, is supposedly a tool himself, but all of this has basically built up a wall of discontent between many Shelby owners and the man himself.

Sorry for the rant. I really do love his cars and what they stand for, but I just can't stomach the man anymore.

actually they are not the same. Different wheel base the H2 has boxed frame etc etc. thats how Hummer got a bad name because noone really knows the truth about them and says its just a tahoe. my H2 does great offraod not quite as good as my alpha but damn close. I bought the h2 for my wife and 2 kids to be safe in. I know if a stupid little escort or somethin hits that they will be fine.
