Thread: Car doesn't start.

    Car doesn't start.

The car ran fine on Friday when my wife took it to work and back home. Yesterday we tried to start it and it just cranked and cranked. It never made a single attempt to start though. It was like it was out of gas or no spark.

If I turn my key on, but don't start the engine, the fuel pump kicks on but never shuts off. I can hear the gas flowing through the fuel lines and there is a constant pressure on the gauge of 38PSI. If the key is shut off, the pump shuts off and the pressure stays. I pulled a plug and it was dry. I'm getting spark all the way down to the plugs as well.

Why doesn't the pump shut off after a few seconds like it always used to? Is the regulator just letting it blow back into the tank? If so, then why is the pressure still there after the key is shut off?

    Thanks,

    John

The fuel pres. guage does stay up for awhile.

Check the moduale on the distributor, I think auto zone can test them, but you have to buy a tool to get it off(like $3)

Or like Adam said could be computer

I hope it's not the computer. I just put that thing in back in the spring. Gotta love it when the senseless things happen!

The computer usually "primes" from 2-4 seconds then shuts the fuel pump off...I have seen the fuel pump "run on" in 2 instances one is a bad load from a aftermarket chip...or a bad computer

    my 2 cents worth

Should the pump run at all if the computer is unplugged? I haven't tried that yet, but it would be easy enough to try.

The fuel pump will not run with the computer unpluged

There is a fuel pump relay on these cars its usually under the drivers seat, not sure if that would cause this kind of a problem, but its worth a try.

I hope it's that simple. Where under the seat? I've had my seat out a million times and never noticed a relay under there. I've got the power wires for the drivers seat, but that's it. Under the carpet? But I had that pulled up before as well and still never noticed it.

Am I blind or stupid? LOL

Nope, my 91 & 93 are under the hood. My old 87 and both 88s were under the seat. I bet they moved them when they went to Mass Air.
