    740rwhp 1995 TT supra

my friend is thinking about either buying a newer body style twin turbo supra with a 6 spdand 740rwhp or doing a swap with that motor into his 87 supra that he had now. I keep telling him that even tho they put out Big hp numbers on dynos they don't do well at the track. (he's into drag racing) I've seen it first hand, a 880rwhp supra that ran mid 11's. Why is this? The guy didn't spin or anything. And i've also heard supras can't normally get out of the 11s. This just baffles me...

I'm sure there are plenty out there that can and do run better that what is perceived as the "norm" in that they are all dyno queens and can't run for crap at the track. I think from the limited knowledge I have on them that people get greedy and just want that big HP number and go out and put too large of a turbo on them and that is when you get slow ET's and big spiky peak HP numbers with little usable RPM range. I think a lower HP car with a more aptly suited turbo would be faster than the "normal" peaky ones we see around the net.

There are fast et supras out there and to be honest that is my favorite car of all time. there are alot of things that go into fast ets, but like what paul stated most get wrapped up into the big hp numbers..

There was a vid of a girl not too long on here with her supra and it shows in one vid it running 11s i think then i knwo there is a vid where its running a 9

So basically their hp curve spikes then drops off drastically?

so why can't most run faster than 11's? Is that a myth?

because A LOT more goes into the times your car runs than your peak hp numbers.

suspension, tires, track conditions, weather conditions, altitude, the drivers ability, weight,......the list can go on forever.

also a car that makes 400ft/lbs at 2000rpm and holds that power till its shift point will probably rape a supra that makes 700ft/lbs but doesnt make that power till 9500 rpm.

a broader torque curve on one car will give better results than one that starts low and climbs all the way till 10k rpm on another car, even if the peak numbers are lower on the car with the broad curve

Combination of a lot of things, like above said, suspension etc etc etc. And as another said, just slapping on a big turbo and making big #'s doesn't always seem as good as it sounds. My car makes over 500 tq at 2200 rpm. Get me off the line a lot quicker at the track as compared to building boost after the launch. I'm betting a lot more people built/use their supras for the street rather and then straight out track. Supras shine on highway rolls, go figure haha. That, however, isnt gonna do dick at the track.

Thanks for the input guys! i think i get it now.

Even though they can put up impressive numbers, the track realy isn't a place for them because the make their HP/TQ way up high and they take too long to spool up. But they're killers from a roll.

    Correct?
