315 tire = heart pounding excitement

The car is 100% ok so dont worry!

I am going to explain something to everyone that wants wide rear tires for more traction and the hidden danger that they have.

I took my car out today and drove it at a normal pace. Nothing crazy just going the speed limit. Well that was until I got to a back road that I have ran for years. It has this nice drop into a valley, then a hill that goes up with a slight bend and a level off half way up before turning into a steeper hill. I have run this thing balls out before with tire screaming. Well the damn snake almost bit me in the ass this time and I wasnt even going as fast as I have gone in the past. I am just glade I have a few years of driving performance cars under my belt and have an idea of how to gather them back up when things go bad. I was running 4k rpm down in the valley and then leaned on it a bit going up the hill (4.5 to 5k rpm). The car was pulling hard starting into the hill then I made it to the part where it leveled off. That is when things got exciting! As soon as the back end lost weight the rear end SNAPPED hard to the driver’s side. It happened so fast I didn’t have time to blink or pucker my butt hole! All I remember is pedaling the throttle and slightly counter steering, when I think back. It was like second nature and I am glad it kicked in like that because if I would have had to think about it…well lets just say it might not have been good. At that time the rear tried everything it could to kick the other way causing the front end to want to point back across the road. My brain said F this and turned the car slightly the other direction while pedaling it some more. It was a fine line between no traction and too much causing the back end to dance around. I ended up driving out of it but it took all my years of experience. If I would have hit the brakes I would have slid into on ditch, if I would have punched the clutch it would have grabbed traction putting me in the other ditch. It was an eye opener thats for sure!! Oh and the tires never made a squeel at all. Just a Zzzzziiiiipppppppp noise or two.

Now on to the cause or what I think...These wide tires take time to heat up and normal driving doesn’t seem to be enough. I dont think my worn out 275 would have done this because they would have been warm by then.

Be careful guys! The wide/cool tires and the cool roads are tricky and just when you relax these Cobras with bite you in the ass.

Alot of it is due to the colder roads now. Traction is going bye byes. HAHAHAH Good story though.

You went for a spirited drive on brand new tires? I don't care how wide they are, that is a bad idea :(

For pretty much the reason you've said - the car biting you in the ass- is why I have road race tires in the back and just a sticky tire in the front of my cobra. In our cars, I'll take understeer on the street all day long... you can always adjust the angle with a flick of the right pedal :)

    Glad you're safe!

The tires have 350 miles on them. Oh the first day was like driving on ice. lol

Yep and the fact that these wide meats take alot longer to warm up.

    haha glad ur safe
Hey remember that spirited drive in Pittsburgh and we thought a cop came up behind us after we slowed down. Well this made that seem like nothing.

Oh good I was going to say, damn ur crazy for going out on new tires. I'm paranoid/weird like that - I even drove around on my track tires for a while before I made a pass on them lol. I never thought about them taking longer to get heat in them - normally one stab of the gas in 1st puts some heat in them

Sorry I should have put that in my post. I run BFG KD 17 275 on the front and BFG KD 17 315 on the rear. The road was also dry and clean.

Good. I was going to buy those in a 275 for my fox. Unfortunatly they are on a huge backorder and wont be available for quite some time. I went with some gererals instead and keep the BFG 275 Dr's on the other wheels for emergencies. HAHAHHA
