Young kids and powerful cars don't mix.
Back when my son was starting to drive I owned a real nasty(fast), '79 Firebird. It was basically a gutted street legal drag car. He wanted to use that car in the worst way but I couldn't in good sense let him. Either he or someone else would have been hurt.

I always hear people say, "you can kill yourself in a slow car too". True, but your recovery time is so limited if you make a mistake in a fast car. Couple that with inexperience and showing off and bad things are bound to happen.

All I can say is RIP.

My only question is WHAT are parents thinking will happen when they put there 17 year old kids into a car thats able to do 150 mph ?

Sounds crazy but I'm 17 and have been driving since the day i turned 16 1/2 and my first car was a decently modded 1998 GT but i completely agree. The only difference between myself and others that are not so fortunate is that my parents get on me for the stupid sh!t i do. 3 months after i had my license they took the keys and made me walk/ride my peddle bike everywhere because i was driving like an a$$hole. 2 months after riding/walking to work everyday during the summer taught me a huge lesson. And when they finally gave me back the keys, my dad sat down and taught me how to recover from being out of control. I'm so thankfull that he did that becuase i probably would have ended up like the young man this thread is about. So a big thanks to my dad. And godbless the family and friends of him. R.I.P.

x2 shorty, my 1st car was my 94 cobra, and granted I have done some really stupid things before, I have def learned my lesson. also my parents threatend to sell it when I got pulled over the second time. it truely is a shame that something as simple as doing a burnout could turn into such a terrible thing

I totally agree shorty. Im 16 and have had my license for a couple months now and ive learned my lesson already. It really gets you scared and thinking whenever you come around a bend and spin out half throttle. Even though ive been driving legally and illegally for about 3 years ive spun out once or twice already and it makes you think before you dump the clutch and turn the wheel again. My car is stock and it scares me with how much power it has and how bad i could get hurt. Im so fortunate that this wasnt me on the news and i try to calm down as much as i can until i get some more expirience under my belt.

Joey was a very good friend of mine and I am deeply affected by his death. We were friends since first grade and I am now a senior at EF. I must say, had someone else been in that car that this tragedy probably wouldn't have happened. I rode with Joey in that car twice and he was a different driver with passengers. Don't get me wrong, we goofed around a little bit out on open highway, but within reasonable limits. The reason he did not have a belt on was that the ones in the car didn't work. As much as I hate to say it, I don't think he would've worn it anyway. I told him I would't ride with him again until he got belts. I was right there in the parking lot when it happened and one of the first on the scene. I still play it in my mind and it gets to me. His dad and i were talking at the funeral home and he even said that that car wasn't running at its full potential, with the timing turned way down. He also said that it took two weeks of stalling before he let Joey drive the car, due to its lack of belts. I'm not too worried anymore, but from what Joey told me, that car was destined to be a quarter mile warrior before he got it. Originally a 4 cyl, Joey's '89 LX Notch had a very stout 302 with Trick Flow heads and intake, some sort of absolutely huge cam, BBK headers, custom exhaust, suspension and rear end out of a '97 GT and a 5-speed with Centerforce clutch. A very hairy ride in deed. My prayers are with Joey and his family and I'll miss him for sure.

Very sad story, RIP.
I would not want to be the father knowing he let his son drive a car w/o seatbelts which ultimately led to his death.
