If you actually look at the pic that started that rumor you can see that all involved are facing the same way as Obama so there is another flag they are all looking at. Also the reasoning Obama gave for not covering his heart during the national anthem makes sense to me.

Obama said the photo was taken during the singing of the national anthem, not the pledge.

Also if you watch that vid you can see a few others also with their hands folded during the anthem. Amazing how a picture can be so misleading isn't it?
