both of our 4.0 have rod knock but 200k miles on both cant complain. and 200k on our one that got wrecked
I think some noise on a higher mileage 4.0 is typical

its common for a 4.0 to make noise. ive owned 4 or 5 and they all made noise
my grand cherokee i bought new in 2002 has always had a light tick to it.
has 106K miles on it so far and runs great.
my mercury has a 4.0....is it the same motor?? 78k and no noise...i hope it doesnt start.

when i first start this it allmost sounds like a diesel .... then settles down to several tickings but runs like a champ and make no noise when reving at all .. all this is new i never owned a jeep so im conserned ...
a 4.0 that is in your mountaineer is a v6 i believe and a jeep is a straight 6 there easily mistaken . 4.0 jeep 4.0 mountaineer

no need to be concerned, thats the exact sound mines been making for the past 6 years....
ours has done it somewhat since new....if it stops then be concerned. :)
