When Alan Mulally took over as CEO of Ford, one of the first things he did was rename the Five Hundred full-size sedan Taurus to take advantage of the nameplate’s strong mindshare. The second thing he did was order a complete redesign of the car. Mulally promised the 2010 Taurus would be “the one we should have made originally.” At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the automaker finally took the wraps off the new model - and we had the opportunity to walk around the models on display.

Ford will reposition the Taurus to become more of a personal luxury sedan, the likes of which have not been seen wearing a Ford badge in many, many years. Ford has decided to combine elements of its “Bold American” and European “Kinetic” design language for the 2010 model.
The new Taurus is powered by the automaker’s 3.5-liter V6 Duratec engine, mated to one of two available six-speed automatic transmissions, including SelectShift with shift paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. As was the case with the previous model, all-wheel-drive is optional.
The V6 motor delivers an estimated 263 horsepower and 249 foot-pounds of torque. It earns a ULEV-II emissions certification and comes paired with a choice of two new six-speed automatic transmissions. Initially, the car will be offered in SE and SEL trim levels. Ford says it plans to offer a performance-oriented EcoBoost model, with an announcement regarding availability coming soon.
Critically, the new 2010 Taurus will start at $25,995 – the same price as 2009 model. The uplevel SEL starts at $27,995 and the top-end Limited will set buyers back $31,995.
“Lightning can strike twice,” said Peter Horbury, Ford’s North American design director. “Like the 1986 original, the new 2010 Taurus differentiates by combining style with substance.”
Taurus features a long list of high-tech features, including: Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning, Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, MyKey parental programmability, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert, Rain-Sensing Wipers, EasyFuel capless refueling, Ford SYNC and Voice-Activated Navigation with SIRIUS Travel Link.
Ford will not offer a Mercury Sable version of the Taurus for the first time since 1986 (not including the brief period when it was renamed Montego to go along with the Five Hundred)."

Looks better than previous models but I would still probably take an Altima or Camry over it. I highly doubt I would ever pay 30K+ for that car though. I'll wait to see it in person before passing more judgement.

why on earth would you buy a camry or altima over that? That Taurus is 100x the car those two are.

    A. I think they look better.
    B. As a consumer, I feel that I get more for my money from the two I mentioned above.

Everyone has their opinion. From what I've seen and read, I would not dish out 30K+ for a Ford Taurus. My money would go to Nissan or Toyota.

But like I also mentioned above, I'll reserve further judgement until I see it in person.

I refuse to turn this into an American vs foreign thread. There is enough crap that goes on here for Lou and the other mods to deal with.

.... the car hasn't even hit the streets and you're already saying it's inferior to Altima and Camry? I'm not picking on you, but this sounds like a statement from someone who has been brain washed by media outlets like Consumer Reports (AKA American Cars SUCK magazine)

My thoughts exactly! .... GREAT LOOKING CAR!

If this car holds up as well as my 2006 "fleet company car Taurus" Ford's going to have another award winning car to add to their line up!

I believe what I said was "from what I've seen and read".

I never said anything about the car being inferior to other cars. Coming from a person that has had many of different cars over the years, I gave MY opinion on the car.

I even said I was going to withhold much criticism until I saw it in person.

    Jeeze people.

engine and trans for the Camry are MANUFACTURED in the US... I am not sure what other components are manufactured here. I have done some work in the engine/trans plant.

Looks pretty good. I dont really understand the point of Ford making a luxury car when the economy is in shambles and the company is headed for the ground. Shouldnt they be more worried about cheaper more efficient cars?

people have been brain washed into thinking they are a superior car. almost everything built now is on an even playing field, and most of them use the same companies to manufacture their parts!

I can tell you we owned a toyota tacoma. at 45k miles the frame had a hole rotted almost the entire way through. it was under powered, cheap and i hated it. also had like 4 subaru's, another foreign car that was nothing spectacular. Im not ripping on them but they are in no way a superior vehicle to a domestic.

the money at the top still sits in another country and that's where the majority of it is reinvested.
