No power to starter relay...need some help

ok this is getting on my nerves here trying to figure out why im not getting power to the little boot going to my starter relay. the boot i am referring to is in this pic:

EVERYTHING else in my car works...all lights, horn, fuel pump, etc. and my car will run if i jump the starter, but i cannot get it to start with the key.

i was under my dash today messing around with a test light.... i pulled the two plugs out of the clutch safety switch (because i didnt know which one came from the ignition and which one went out to the relay) and i tested them both with the key in the START position, and neither was getting power. So i started poking the little needle on the test light into where the wires go into the ignition switch....i found that on most wires, i am getting power when the key is in the ON position but the power is not there when i move the key to the START position.

Does this mean i have a bad ignition switch???

There is a white with pink striped wire coming out of the ignition switch. It is hot with the key in start. It is white/pink all the way to the neutral safety switch. When it comes out of the n/s it is red with light blue stripe all the way to the relay. I couldn't trace the wire from the ignition to the n/s. So I said f' it and ran a wire from the ignition straight to the solenoid. Its a big no-no to do this ('cause the car will now try to turn over in gear) and I plan on fixing it when the weather it nice, but it let me continue with the project for now. Not sure if the colors are the same for later years, but mine is an '87.
