    Rear Main Seal 04 Cobra

I need to change my rear main seal. I see there is a retainer plate that appears to contain the seal. Has anyone changed a seal?

It has a plate that looks like the seal is pressed into.

You don't need to touch that plate. Treat it like any other rear main seal

If for some reason you have a problem getting the seal out,,,, Then feel free to pull that plate. The seal will come out with it. Just be REAL cautious to clean all the silicone from the groove in the plate, and the block surface. And don't go nuts with the new stuff as you need that plate to sit flat against the block to hold the seal straight. IF NOT,,, you'll be doing this again next year

Ya I never heard of taking a plate off that seemed weird. X2! Just pop it out like any other seal.

It should be the same size if that's what you mean. Just tap it in the a hammer. Be easy and try to put it in staight. Not one side at a time.

Just take your time and "walk" a 3'8 extension around the outside of it with a small hammer. When you say bigger diameter, what exactly do you mean? It should be the exact dimensions of the one you removed???

I don't think that tools worth it. Its very easy to take the old one out and tap the new one in gently.

Call Ford, which is where I hope your getting your new seal from. I remember talking to the parts guy about that "slinger" piece, ordering it, AND SENDING IT BACK!!! Its just a metal ring that helps hold the seal in place. There should be nothing wrong with the one you have, assuming you dont bend it horribly when pulling it out. Just reuse it. It is the seal that goes bad.

There is always a tool for the job, and someone whos found a way aroung using it. Take your pick...
