    Computer Experts

I think I'm finally going to break down and buy a new home PC. We have had this one for ~7 years. Anyone that's into computers have some recomendations for minimum specifications (processor, ram, OS, etc). Wifey plays some on line games (Like Pogo, not heavy applications), surfing the net, music (iPods), pictures and such. I dont think I would call it heavy use, but want one that will be around through the next Microsoft upgrade. Any recomendations on good deals are appreciated as well.

This is what I did with the computer I had before the one I have now. Bob, I had it built at a computer store in Latrobe and the customer service was excellent!! I have recently updated to an imac with 24" wide screen and it kicks ass!! I do know you mentioned something about Microsoft. There are ways to use that on mine, but not as easy as just buying one with microsoft? lol

On edit, I am by no means a computer expert lol

i have a mac right now and i HIGHLY recommend getting one... the operating system is so much faster than vista and everything about the computer is much higher in quality. Dont let the different interface of the operating system scare you off, its very very easy to get used to.

Thanks everyone, I will get to the PM's tonight.

No chance of a Mac for me, I use my laptop for tuning but do analyze datalogs and use the tuning software on my home PC and none of that is compatible (I know there are work arounds).

oh alright then i just wasnt sure if you knew about being able to run windows on a mac...

in that case i would go with HP they do have great deals. And if you are getting vista i would get at least 2 GB of ram and hard drive size is really up to you. I would go for a dual core processor as well

I've been in the computer field for quite a while.
BS in computer science, A+ certified, former laptop technician, and have been a software engineer for almost 7 years now.
I say buy a refurbished system from somewhere like NewEgg.com or Buy.com.
A few years ago it was cheaper to build your own computer. Not anymore.

Thanks to everyone for your input and guidance. We ended up with a HP, 2.8ghz, 500 gb HD, 4 mb ram + 20" widescreen :D Of all things, we ended up getting it at Sam's Club for $699.00. Pretty good price all things considered.
