Got some dyno ###'s last night!!

Well i finally took my car to the dyno last night and made a couple pulls to see where I was. I have the sheets but im too dmb to figure out how to post them. Anyway i ended up with...

    421hp@6300rpm

    363ftlbs@4700

    12.7 average afr

The first run it made 397hp with a rich 12.3 afr so i pulled the secondary power valve and stuck a 79 jet in it and and lowered the primary jetting to 71. The next run it made 421 with a leaner 12.8-9 afr. We tried adding some timing but it started to detonate so we pulled 2deg below baseline and it made about the same power +/-1hp/tq so i was happy with less timing and the same power. my combo is in my sig. any thoughts on possible improvements? or is this combo maxed out?
i would love to get the sheet up here so if anyone could post it for me that would be great!!

    Cool more power!

those are good numbers . i've had alot of windsors 351-362 cu in. and usually 750cfm was the ticket but it sounds like maybe an 830-900 cfm might be the ticket . i would like more details of your combo but i think you could squeeze out a little more across the board with a little more carb. also don.t no your ignition?

18deg idle/36 deg all in at 3000ish timing

i was thinking of adding a 1" spacer and a crankcase evac system.

i wasnt sure if i should be dissapointed or happy with my numbers. i thought it would still be climbing at 6400 instead of goign flat.

last summer i went 11.62@120 with a1.68 60' time i was going through the traps at about 6500rpm with a 26-10-17 et street

i was thinking that with 420hp it should be a bit faster at the track? it runs pretty good on the street so im happy with cruising it around and drive it to all the events zeli, keystone...etc

Is your combo NA carbed? Looks a little fat if that is average. You picked up 25 HP going .4 leaner, heck there might be 50 more HP in there :D
For sure fat is safe, but this looks like it's really costing you some power.

i was thinking about trying to pull some more jet from it, but, i wasnt really trying to beat the snot out of the car just for the sake of a dyno number. It was nice to know the motor is healthy and my tune is pretty close. i might throw a spacer on it and take my bigger carb with me next time for testing.

My suggestion is the same as Bob's...pull some more fuel out of it.

Why did you block off the PV?

MAYBE 20hp by leaning it out some but even thats generous.
What type of dyno? If its a dynojet it might want to be where you have it when its loaded going down the track.
Good numbers and it sounds like you're close, just play with it in small amounts at the track.

Cool if its not broke don't go to lean!you'll burn it easy on a dyno!

hey ! it sounds like a good combo . what octane were you dyno'ng with and how old was the fuel ? i say that because of the ping -thing you had! i take it your running a stock crank stay 6500 or under and it will last forever and i say that with experience on pleanty of dirt tracks. with that engine a 2 inch super sucker type spacer 4 hole(wilson) could make you 25hp easy across the powerband .that is if you have the hood clearance. i would at least try a k&n stub stack but if you can try a 830 cfm carb tricked out for sure. and you always have a few pony's left with valve lash loose more bottom end ,tighter more top end ! timing will depend on conditions at test time and elevation etc. i had simular combo once remember an effeceint cylinder head won't require any thing past 36 total timing and anytime you make good power with less timing your headed in the right direction. what did you degree the cam at? i hope you left pleanty of main bearing clearance for that 3inch main i always ran .004-.0045 at least .0023-.0025 on rods if there 2.311 size .is it balanced? give me more details about the long block i'll have you at 500hp in no time. lol!

Good numbers Ben. I'll have to take you to the dyno with me to help me tune the carb, since I know about nothing!

Cool 12-13:1 will always make best dyno numbers n/a!

but at the track 14-15:1 will run lowest laps or et thats a fact.so add more air to the formula you'll make more peak torque say at 5300 rpm thats where that victor jr will shine always . and torque will prevale. on a 358 in the upper rpm look at nascar (roush, yates).what rocker ratio and type are you using?stud size?if that fuel concern checked out always when you feel your running out of breath on top end look at fuel volume /pressure/mixture/restriction fuel or air!what rods, bolts, ring size, oil pump, did you index the distrib and gear always a concern with billet cams and can really screw up your spark timing .(ping) did you run main studs w/or w/o a girdle with a stick car you really get the caps walking with heavy rotating mass like windsor stuff around 7000 rpm .also b4 i forget don't know if i would run vacum pump set up w/ zero gap stuff just yet. let it eat and loosen up some . evac works real well with equal length long tube merge type headers 20hp on dirt car easy . make sure you use the rite parts. drive it like you stole it always-worked for me !you will soon need to get rid of the 17 inch et streets if you make the full potential hp!and when all is said and done light'n that pony up asap & hook it hard!

ok so i did some research and checked some of my part numbers the valve springs i have are comp 939-16 which say 118lbs installed and 468 open. i double checked the comp listing and it shows that i should have a 953-16 which has 187lbs installed and 513 open. Im running vic jrs and a xr286r street roller so could having 70lbs less installed pressure and 45lbs open make the motor quit pulling early?

To answer the other questions the bottom end clearances are all nice and loose to keep the bearings alive, high pressure pump, stock rods with the 225.000psi arp bolts and main studs, cometic head gaskets, quench is right at .037". All the oil passages were chamfered and smoothed. The fuel is about three weeks old and the best sonoco has to offer 93oct...lol

Im running a msd 6A with a billet distributor with the 8deg spacer and both light springs.

im not sure how i ended up with these springs but they arent the right ##. Im just not sure if im expecting too much from my combo or if i should be happy with it. the reason im trouble shooting is that i was expecting the curve to continue to climb untill i shut it down.

    Options so far

    1. carb spacer

    2. throw a 850 race demon on it

    3. synthetic oil

    4. header evac kit

    5. different valve springs

    6. change lash settings

7 degree cam( currently dot to dot)

8 try leaning it out a half point or so.

oh sorry forgot to mention. yes its balanced to 28oz with a good balancer, billet steel flywheel, jake savani did my block prep, balancing, and i assembled the whole deal.

no problem mark ill come to the dyno with you. Make sure you get notched floats and jet extensions for that carb if your going to road race it. i help you out no prob....it seems i can put a motor combo together that works....finally!!

Hell Yea! Of course I tend to oversping my junk, but yes you will oose high rpm valve control if the spring isnt up to required rate.

Keep that in ind as well. Pump gas this time of year has MORE Ethanol, and is in effect real crap. You get a hold of some better summer blend or something from a drum it should pick up too.

It is a dynojet dyno in clairton right up the hill. Im not sure how i ended up with the 939-16 springs

    heres what the box says...

    137lbs @1.900

    spring rate 467 lbs inch

    coil bind 1.225

comp lists a 953-16 as the proper spring, but i have victor jr heads? i cant believe i put the wrong ones in there? dumb mistake if thats the case.

Cool those are good numbers out the first time anywhere!

i would still like to know the rocker style and ratio? the baseline engine you started with is very good you should have no problem making 500+ hp and 400+trq at the wheels when its all said and done .expect winter gas to cause you a few hp even if its new .93 sunoco is not what it once was!first and foremost get the correct valvesprings on there check for bind &interferance fit and while your at it degree your cam .stick with comp cams specs even with the lash for now until you get the bugs out.go back to you baseline timing and jetting numbers get to the dyno take your 850 carb and a 4 hole spacer that will fit and longer studs .try it with the original tune it should rev a little free now . you should go by you afr now i would try the 850 if it kills bottem end go back to the 750 w/spacer if not try the spacer w/ the 850 all this while jetting as needed now if you reached the peak number play with the timing only 2 degrees at a time .save the evac & synthetic for when your well broken in 1500.k or so if you really want just the number higher get your afr as close to 14.7:1 n/a (lol) and see how it goes it is mind boggling isn't it .weather changes everything anyway. but once your close and you stay in the same altitude you'll always be real close .i hope this helps you and keep posting the #'s
