I'm in the market for a new mountain bike too. What are some things that differentiate a good bike from a bad one? To me they all kinda look the same, but I'm sure there's gotta be something about the brand names(Trek, Cannondale, Schwinn... etc.) that make them better than the ones at walmart. The main things that I'm looking for are disc. brakes, aluminum frame and no rear suspension.

components are what make the bike shifters brakes the derailers "sp" are what make a great bike. the frame is the cheap part in comparison. an xtr group will run you more than 1000 bucks alone

I agree, nothing worse than trying to ride a bike that won't stay in gear. What are some things to look for as far as the shifters and derailers go? I don't need anything too serious, just something that works well.

Problem with a mtb is, at least for me, they all have bad motors.

Bad motor gets better with time.
I go to the doctors and they think I am dead.
Resting pulse in the 40's and 90/60 blood pressure.

Do not get a walmart bike. Go to a bike shop and tell them what you want.
    Read the reviews on
    mtbr.com

The components are the key. Your better off with the best component group you can afford.
XTR is the top of the line shimano.
Then it goes Deore XT then LX which is the minimum I would recommend
SRAM also makes a mountain group.
