well this one seems to be well taken care of .it has 117 on the clock and runs excellent . was garaged kept so no rust issues and does not have the usual exhaust tic from the manifolds . seems solid . i just hope it turns out to be a good truck

    my sister has a 01 4.6L auto.

    Truck sucks.
-underpowered IMO. horrible acceleration ( i know its a truck, but it's bad), towing is ok i guess. she tows her horses with it. and it eats pads and rotors like crazy.

check the doors about 3 inches up the window above the door handle the metal is prone to cracking and also the seam at the bottom of the doors rust out on 97 and 98's

My Dad had a 97, he drove it to work every day. He loved it, it had the 4.6 and it ran great. It had well over 100,000 miles on it when he traded it in on his 06. It even had the original exhaust on it.

I own a 98 f150 4.6 auto. Do you want a list of what to look for? lol

    1. Make sure the exhaust manifold bolts are not rusted out. I can NOT say this enough! My truck was fine when I bought it but after a week of driving it 80 miles a day 3 of my bolts snapped off.

It cost me big time to have the old studs drilled out and new manifolds, studs, egr tube, gaskets bla bla bla all replaced. After this repair the truck was running rich and I discovered that the MAF was dirty so I pulled it and cleaned it with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. It ran great for a few months and then I had to pull the TB and intake to clean the EGR ports with an ice pick. It was plugged up so bad no cleaner in the world would have cleaned it. Everything was running great after that until I had a miss a few weeks ago. After that I put over 20k on it with out a problem other than the bearings in the alternator locking up.

A few weeks back I left a slight miss that turned into a BIG miss and we swapped out plugs, wires and one coil pack. It seems to be ok now but not 100% right so I just ordered another coil pack so I can replace them both.

As much as I drive the old girl I dont think thats half bad for a truck with 136k on it. It had 109k when I bought it.

Yep I have those problems too. I guess after 98 Ford welded a plat in the doors to keep them from cracking.

Couldnt have said it any better....the 4.6 in an f150 is about as dumb as putting a v6 in an f250. Underpowered...sluggish and acceleration well doesnt feel like there is any!!! only way to go is a 5.4. they get the same mpg. i know you here of the 5.4's blowin plugs and such but the ol man's truck has 112000 on it and changed the plugs once and it still runs like a champ.

True...mise well have....but the 4.6 is a lot more sluggish than my v6 in the stang. seriously...the 4.6 is frustrating after you've been behind the wheel of a 5.4. makes you wonder why they ever put that in a truck.
