Question Anyone know where to get remanufactured explorer engine?

my dad and i just pulled the engine out of our 2002 explorer and the timing chain is completely FUBAR. it caused the valves to hit the pistons among other things.

we were wondering where to look for a remanufactured engine or possibly a used one. its a 4.0 L v6. anybody know of anything??

thanks for the suggestions guys...only thing im worried about with a used engine is the timing chaing being bad or being worn down in the used engine as well....ive been doing a little reading and apparently a lot of people have this problem with these engines. the guide around the timing chain is freaking plastic and it just exploded....good job ford

Are you CERTAIN it bent valves?? If just the guides broke then it shouldn't have bent valves. I've done numerous set of these, including one set where it was so far out of time it wouldn't start. None of them had bent valves.

thats how ours was....it would crank and crank and crank and would not start....im not 100% sure if the valves are bent or not but they left nice little nicks in the pistons and there was a ton of valve train noise for the last 2000 or so miles (maybe more) before it finally wouldnt start. havent ripped apart the heads yet just took them off

heres a pic of one of the pistons, they are flat tops but you can see the nicks from the valves...sorry for the crappy pic its from my cell i took real quick before heading back to school....

thats sludge with gas in the cylinder from trying to crank it a bunch of times before finding out what it was. we replaced fuel filter, crank sensor, coil, etc and cranked it a ton of times trying to get it to start after replacing numerous things

Hm, I would say the valve definitely touched the piston. Maybe not hard, but it DID touch. So just slapping gaskets and new chains on that wouldn't be an option without sending the heads out to be checked. Depending on the mileage (if it's fairly low) that might be the way to go. A rebuilt one won't be cheap, and I've seen used 4.0 SOHC motors go for $1200 with over 100K.

Just a heads up if thats what you decide to do, There are special tools needed to time that motor.

yeah we were going to take the heads to a machine shop and have them get checked out for sure if we were going to be rebuilding it ourselves.

do you know what this special tool is by any chance? the motor was a huge pain just getting out. there are so many sensors and wires and plugs and sh*t and it was designed so dumb. i just wish it was a carb'd 5.0...it'd make things a lot easier lol

When the heads are at the machine shop have them port and polish them! You'll have the fastest explorer around!

There are 4 separate tools needed to time this motor.
    1: crank pulley holder
2: "dummy" cam tensioner - solid piece put in place of tensioner to make
chain tight so you can torque the cam and "jackshaft" bolts.
3: cam holding piece - holds the cam in place
4: Cam sprocket holder - holds the cam gear in place while you torque it to
    the cam.
Cams and jackshaft have NO keyways. Bolt torque is all that keeps
    them from spinning.

I know it sounds like alot, but I've done a handfull of these and it's not so bad. Just have to be careful and follow procedure. It calls for 18+ hours to do chains in these motors. I've got it down to about 11.

wow 18 hours thats crazy.... but after taking it apart i can understand why you would need all these tools, they make sense after seeing how it came apart. my father was trying to price things this week to see what our next move should be. ill let him know about all this. thanks for your help!
