    ATV advice

I haven't owned a quad in years (10+) and have been looking around at some used ones. I know times have changed dramatically since I have last ridden (mid-late 90's) and am really not sure what I want to get myself into. By no means am I an experienced rider, but I have ridden a lot of different stuff from a 200 Big Red Honda 3 wheeler to a race-prepped Banshee. The main purpose for me wanting one is just to do some basic trail riding. Back in the day, I used to love the little Blasters and Yamaha Warriors, but Im worried that I wouldn't be happy with a Blaster due to my size (6'2 - 265) and it seems like every Warrior I find is beat or overpriced. I'm not in a hurry to buy anything and I'm not sure if I even will, but I guess I'm just looking for some opinions...it seems like there are alot of guys on here who ride and know what they are talking about.

IMHO, I would go with around a 400 or bigger. You'd probably be real suprised with the power these quads produce these days. I actually really like the KFX-400's, or the Yamaha 450R's. I don't really care much for 4wd quads, so that's why im just giving you my opinion on the sport quads. If you really looking for a bigg quad, a KFX-700 is real sweet IMO BUT its an automatic..V-Twin, dual pipes, pretty sick..There real nice, ballsy too. Hope that helps some!

I rode a newer KFX450 and thought it was slow... :D but that's all relative of course ....

I don't judge quads well b/c i'm a bike rider, and all quads seem slow to me... but from the way folks talk, the racing/sport quads have a lot of balls, and if you don't wanna fly, there might be no purpose in getting one... Furthermore, my buddy's 450 quad gets stuck all the time in crap because of how low the rear end sits... if you're not paying attention at all times and making sure you straddle all ruts, your'e going to end up stuck on one

but take everything i say with a grain of salt... i'm not a 4wheeler rider... just trying to relay some of the things i hear/notice

get a bike and never look back, well except to see where all your buddies are :).. I got a 250 for sale.. But my buddy that i ride with has a special editon yfz450 and yea its fast and everything but i keep up with him in the woods on my 250f as long as i know where we are going lol. he doesnt get stuck that much but he does get stuck going oever logs and in certain places but to get a 450 for the woods is stupid IMO especially if you ride tight trails cause you have all that power and really never get to use it.

400ex or a raptor 660 are nice quads.. dont forget reverse is nice too. lol

I had my share of hotrod two stroke ATV's back in the day. Now that I'm a little older my riding style and preferences have changed dramatically. Most of my trails at camp are wide open or tight rocky stuff, so the perfect ATV for me was a Polaris 500 Srambler 4x4 (4 stroke). Put a clutch kit on it and it will run well, not as fast as ATV's like Raptors but it will keep up. Get into tight stuff no problem you have 4X4 and reverse. Only down side which I now prefer is it's an automatic.

I also really like my Sportsman's ... they are little TANKS in the woods! They can also get up an move!

definatly would go 400 and bigger. what do you prefer bikes or quads? i dont like dirtbikes at all but thats me. quads can ride year round wit out any issues, most people i know that own bikes dont ride much in the winter cause it takes alot to keep them going.

the yfz450 is a nice bike, just gotta keep up on the maintance on them.they cost a good bit to fix also when they break.

i got a predator 500, runs with the yfz450 easly. it's fast but when i wanna putt around i can wit out any worries.

400ex is good bike to ride, there not that expensive and hold there own all around.

two of my buddys have yfz450's and they have no issues trail, track or road riding. heck i seen them go few places 4wd's didnt. i think how you ride has alot to do with the kinda bike you got.

if you aren't that great on a quad then i would stay away from RR quads.

not really .... but kinda of?? I would like Kaw to make the KFX-700 as a sport 4x4, kind of like the Scrambler 500 4x4.

I have a heavily modded blaster my self and love the thing, but at your size you would probably kill it. I would look into a Raptor or Bombardier DS650 is you want a sport quad. Rode the KFX700 didn't like it because I hated the automatic trans, and I wasn't really impressed with the stock one I rode cause it wasn't really faster than my blaster(again my quad is far from stock) , and the seat hurt my arse. The 400EX is comfy, but it's heavy and underpowered. I'd still like to try a Z400 or a KFX450, at some point, but I probably end up buying a Banshee because I love 2 strokes.

Of those 2, I would highly recommend the 400EX, much better IMO and I am a Yamaha guy. The newer ones even have reverse.
