    New Guy

1989 GT, recently purchased, not much of a gear head, but am diving in head first and want to try and learn as much as I can.

When I turn left and smash it, the car will go sideways, but when I am making a right and smash it, only the right wheel spins. I was also told that the car has 3.73's

My first of many questions for you guys is:

If this was a posi car this should not do this right?

Second: If the car does have 3.73's what rpm should I expect to see at 70mph in 5th gear?

I am also looking to go to a 4.10 gear. how hard is it to install a posi, (if not installed) and the gears? That is all the questions for one night many more to come. Hoping not to be a pain in the A$*.

    Thanks,
    Neil

    Hi and welcome!

All fox GT's and 5.0 LX cars had traction-lock rear ends, so it sounds like the clutches are worn out in your differential. Some of the guys on SCS have their own shops and can handle the rebuild / gear swap for you. I know Timmy Rodeheaver does this quite a bit, and I can vouch for his work, as he has done a few things on my '66 and cars owned by people I know.

I have 4.10's in my '90 LX and for daily driving it is a bit much. I'd actually prefer 3.73's or 3.55's in my car, which is only lightly modified ( cam, headers, exhaust, ignition, etc. ). Luckily, my commute to work is less than 7 miles, so it isn't so bad. However, I do have to admit that my 3-year old daughter really likes how the car pulls in all gears with the 4.10's!!!!! Of course, she doesn't have to pay the gas bill every month either...

Anyway, good to have you aboard. Now...get some pics posted of your ride!

unless your gonna use it for track only id stay with 373's. defiantly sounds like clutches are out. if you have never opened up a rearend and arent mechanically inclined i would have a shop do it.
