There's a guy where I work who makes comments every now and then about my Mustang. He drives a Saturn is sort of an enviro-friendly type dude. Always inquires about how much gas it uses, how much money I have into it, and asks why do I feel the need to make my car fast. I just tell him, if you don't get it, nothing I say to you will help you to get it. It's something I dreamed of as a kid and have been doing since I had enough money to buy my first car. It gives me pleasure.

My wife views a car as an appliance. She understands and tolerates my hobby as long as I don't accrue debt to fund my go fast parts.

My mom and dad always tell me to be careful. "You're gonna kill yourself in that thing !" I'm 49 years old. LOL....My dad used to ride in the car with me, but I opened it up from a dig once and it scared the crap out of him. He actually asked me to stop the car so he could call home and have my mom pick him up. I told him I wouldn't do it anymore, so he agreed to let me drive him home. LOL....he hasn't been in the car since.

It's just one of those things you either have, or you don't. I've always been fascinated with cars in general and fast cars in particular. I don't know why, just a combination of the sounds, smells, and sensations of having a (relatively...LOL) fast car.

Frank, I gotta tell ya man... I look forward to reading your longer posts like this. You've got your head on straight and know how to express it in words.

And if you want to say something smart back to the guy, tell him "listen, its like a penis... you're either born with it, or you're not" hahahaah

Glad my wife lets me do all most anything LOL. People all ways have to say some thing when they are jealous of what other people do. I all ways get, must be nice to have all those toys! F*#K you I say, go to the bank like I did and get a loan, you can have what I have too. Get this too, Must be nice to have money! F*#K you again, I didn't come from money nor do I make big money and the same goes for my wife. She came from a lot poorer family than I did. WORK for it like we did. People are asses! should be asking "how do you do it" than saying "must be nice" I really kick them in the ass when I say OH! my house is paid off too! LOL

I dont think you dont understand my point. I dont let them get to me I am just trying to figure out were or why they think that they have the right to say anything. Like others have said. We could waste "more" on beer or drugs and strippers but we dont. We just have a rather expensive hobbie.

My Ex was the best about cars but that was 2 years ago now. She is currently setting up for Ford, GM and all the others at the big car shows in Vegas and other places. Her dad was heavy into car and took me under his wing when we first met. I was her first car guy and he loved that. Sadly he past shortly after we met and I didnt get to spend as much time as I wanted with him. Before I could make it back out my ex girlfriend ended up flipping out because of this and just wasnt the same person after that. She asked me to marry her after we first met so I should have known something was wrong. lol Lets just say it hasn't been as exciting since. lol

    I'm assuming you mean girlfriends/fiances/wives/etc.

Clearly I don't, as I am almost always ****ing around with something on my car or a friend's car or taking pictures or posting on car sites - however that isn't to say that I would prioritize a possession over a person (if all things are good and healthy in the relationship, as mine is). I'll put the cobra on the back burner for my gf not because I have to, but because I want to. If that changes to "because I have to" then its time for a talk to set things straight. That shit doesn't fly, unless you're putting yourself in debt or your spending is out of control. But for lack of attention? they need to get outta here with that bs!

Don't take what I said the wrong way earlier, as my current girlfriend loves the cobra, she just isn't all about the baggage that comes with it (detailing it, forums, cruises, etc.) because its not hers to take care of/show off. The other girl I was talking about was just used to that type of stuff from her dad growing up. Most girls also never really have the gearhead mentality nor do they have those types of tendencies to start modding something that they just bought when its working perfectly fine just to make it "better" or "their own" and I'll never know why

It’s just in our blood. People ask me when I first got interested in cars and I just tell them "Ever since I can remember". Then they ask what cause my fascination. They always guess "The freedom" for some reason. I think most people that use car to just get from point A to point B think this but in all honesty that’s just not it. I agree that it’s a combination and only certain cars flip that switch for me. The Cobra and I are a perfect fit so far.

Like I mentioned before.... I don’t let them get to me I just wanted to see how you explain things to them but like others have said. "You either get it or you don’t"

That's a big part of it. After we were seperated she to me and asked the hypathetical question, Would I sell the car if she and our daughter came back? I told her I would never sell the car for her and that our daughter would always have a home with me. Little did I know she already had a boyfriend, so I'd say I made a good decision.

I was getting slack about my last Mustang before I was even getting the ball rolling on the replacement motor. Everyone says "You're 19 (then). Why do you need a 440 horsepower car?" Because I can afford it and I want it.

Now obviously since then, things changed and now i got a brand new 08 GT. Don't have the extra money for go-fast parts, but I don't care. I'll be out of college in another year, making 4-5X what I make now and probably be in my own house. I'm 20 now. I don't need a fast car right now. I got my whole life ahead of me for that, and I already know I'm gonna be questioned on it just like everyone else on here for it

Same here. Wifey is very tolerant of my obsession with 2.3 cars and is into it as much as me. Not so much the mechanical end of it, but she loves to be at the races, events, etc. I keep the budget tight on my racing and we don't want for anything at home. I could care less what anyone else thinks ;)

Good decision indeed, especially with the whole daughter having a home thing too.

I used to hear this a lot from high school friends as well... it really was annoying, but my attitude on it was ... 'what did you do in high school? jacked off, and look where it has gotten you...' - I was the Valedictorian of my class, went to school on a full ride scholarship, and then got myself a great job, of which many of my friends probably still don't have a friggin' idea of what I do... and do you think it was just all handed to me? hell no, i worked my ass off for it ... and if you ask any of my close friends, i STILL work my ass off for it on a daily basis (b/c of my professional examinations)...

The problem is, in my generation people expect everything to be handed to them.. if you're one of the "lucky" ones who has some luxuries, then it "must be nice." I just don't know what happened to the mentality of working hard for the things you have... I hated growing up in such an EXTREMELY strict household in the middle of nowhere - but nowadays, i see that it has done nothing but good things for me!

Bish, I totally agree. I think people today have a totally different mentality regarding work ethic. My parents raised me to work for everything I ever had. When I started driving, I bought my own car, paid for my own gas, paid for my own insurance... if I didn't have a job and couldnt pay for those things, I didn't have them. And in turn, I appreciated everything I had that much more because they were what I had earned for my hard work. Until a couple years ago, I had nothing but hard manual labor jobs to pay for things (shoveled concrete/loaded trucks at a precast concrete plant, painted houses, worked in a distribution center stacking pallets and driving fork lifts, some landscaping, etc...)

I also came up pretty much the same as you did, while I was not valedictorian, I did graduate HS with a 4.72 and graduated VT with a 3.87, dean's list, cum laude, all that good shit. While I still did some partying, I kept it all in check and worked my friggin ass off while my friends skipped and failed classes. They may have some better stories about their college career, but they are all working shitty jobs while I'm loving what I do.

OH, I agree! My mom was blunt about it when she told me all the time. I don't have the money to buy that for you. If you want it, figure it out how your going to pay for it. I did! 40+ cars and trucks later and 2 houses. 1st house got my 2nd NEW house with a profit of 80g's that went to it and 10 years later it's paid off. I did it all with work and no college ed. I'm proud of my wife and myself for what we did together. That's something NO one can take away from me.

    Me too on that Dan!

I was raised by a widow mother that had no job skills, was just a mother from when she was married. Too proud to go on welfare. Made me that much stronger to make it.
