    pinion seal???

my pinion seal is leaking all over the place and my rear is starting to make some good noise probably because of the oil loss...so im gonna pull my entire 8.8, sand blast it, paint it, change gear oil and change pinion seal while its out.

any advice on changing the pinion seal? any special tools needed or anything like that? never changed one before...

If I were you, I would take everything apart, you may have a bad bearing if it's noisy and wasn't before...

one thing to check on, i have found at least 2 s197 cars with the diff vent clogged!! i have seen a bunch of foxes with it clogged but i never thought a new car would have it clogged.. Just be sure during final inspection before assembly that its not clogged, especially if you are getting it sand blasted..

You could just put a twisted wire wheel on a grinder and clean up the housing that way. Just make sure you wear serious eye protection and be careful not to catch an edge the wrong way or it'll rip the grinder right out of your hands. When I put a wire wheel on my grinder I had to remove the guard - so be really careful how you point that thing. You won't have to worry so much about sand getting inside the housing.

You can use a wire brush for the really tight areas where the grinder won't reach.

This method worked really well for the rears in both of my '66 Mustangs and the rear in my Dad's '57 TBird. Once you're done hit the housing with some brake kleen a few times, wipe it down, and you're ready for paint.

    Good luck!
