I was in shock when i wrote that. No pity party here, life is good, I'm still breathing & above ground.
You can always find someone with a worse situation than yourself. Although, being stung inside the ear by a wasp makes me cringe...
The week has been a roller coaster ride for me & the family. I never knew how many people knew & loved my dad until a couple hundred of them showed up at the viewing.
I also had no idea how much work was involved after the death with insurance, utilities, credit cards, social security, etc... If you have the opportunity & your parents will allow you, get things organized in advance.

I'm late also, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. That's a nice testament to your dad that that many people have come out for the viewing.

My father worked 2 & 3 jobs, all his working life, to feed, clothe & put three sons through college. So, he was around that much as a kid. It wasn't that he didn't pay attention to us, there just wasn't much time available. We were well fed, look at me... and didn't want for anything necessary.
As I got older, graduated & he retired, I got to know him far better & became friends. We did some trips together, completed many projects & hung out on occasion. I was blessed to get to know him better. I could always call dad for troubleshooting advice, he was a pretty good mechanic.
We all have the loss of our parent(s) in our future if we're alive long enough. You need to talk to them, learn their wishes in life & death and be prepared for them to depart at any time. I was fortunate enough to spend time with him & don't harbor any significant regrets.
I had no idea how much work & paperwork was involved in the death of a parent. I've spent the last few days on the phone, computer & in-person filing forms, doing paperwork & providing documentation. Sorting through Dad's records has been an adventure.
I don't pretend to know or minimize anyone else's loss or mis-fortune. I can only try to relate my sense of loss & what I've learned.

Mark, it is a tough time. I lost my dad when I was 21. He was 37. It was in a work related accident. For me to be that young, it was more than torture. My parents divorced when I was 4. For obvious reasons, they were still just kids. I didnt really get much time to know him and become friends with him. Your very lucky that you got to enjoy those times with yours. I think the worst part about mine was when I got to his place in North Carolina, there was a 1 way plane ticket with my name on it. He wanted me to come live with him and learn the business and eventually take over. Atleast thats what his wife of a 3 years told me. It was a construction company. Times were tough then trying to figure everything out.
