They just did a story a couple weeks ago, it's all about $$$$. They can resurface twice as many roads with the same budget. Sucks for those of us that have nice cars...

Sad thing with oil and chipping is it does nothing to save a road. I have seen them do this to freshly repaved roads that are flat and level. So I don't by the winter traction as it doesn't help. Also they leave the chips for more then a day. I have seen chips left for 3 days before they came back to power sweep the road.

They do it here too, I cringe every time I have to drive on it. They're even doing major high ways with it now, like rt. 51. I don't think that's ever been done before.

There is an acute area directly infront of your line of vision. Its 8.5X5.5. That area and have nothing. Then there is the "critical"area. Thatrs the wiper sweep. If the crack is not in that area, you will be ok. In other words, get shorter wipers. Its the inspectors final decision weather it passes or not. Some are dicks and others really dont care unless its a complete shot that obstructs your vision.

Three days last week, I saw three different cars with flats on route 30 west, kind of in front of Barns & noble / boulevard. Not sure if they allcame out of that Giant Eagle plaza, or down 30, but two of the three had broken beads they where that bad. Cars where all pulled off on the left shoulder there so they had to happen fast. Something was going on in that area last week.

Most auto insurance policies will waive your deductible if you opt to have the windshield repaired. I don't mean replaced - just repaired. They'll have a glass company come to your car and clean the damaged area, use a machine to pull a vacuum on the crack, then "inject" a clear resin into it. This will prevent the crack / chip from spreading. This type of claim will not affect your insurance premium.

So if PennDot won't honor your claim, call your insurance company and see if your policy covers this service.

I've been told that a windshield won't pass inspection if a crack is directly in the driver's field of vision. I had a nice quarter-sized chip where a tennis ball sized rock bounced off a dump truck on the turnpike - it was halfway below the rear view mirror and the bottom of the windshield. The car ( Explorer ) still passed inspection for 2 years before I had the windshield replaced due to a large crack that occurred from another rock.

    Good luck!

Well I made an appointment to get the chip fixed at 3:00 and then the inspection is at 4:30. This should be a fun day for me.

I also heard that there is a 90% chance that penndot will say this was caused by an "act of god". If this happens I am going to find that rock and make sure it has "Made by God" stamped on it.
