After reading about the cash for clunkers all it did was tick me off. I keep seeing vehicles that look better than my first car stacked up to be crushed. I hope they get a recycling program together so all those cars don’t sit in a junk yard for years on end. That and all these people that lost everything in the hurricanes would have killed for an old truck to use for clean up or transportation. And why the HELL is my tax money being used to buy other people cars.

The more I read the higher my blood pressure gets.

i think the cfc program should be for american cars ONLY! thats our tax dollars bailing out the car makers even more. it shouldnt be our tax dollars going to the foriegn car makers. we send enough money over seas, its time to keep it home!

For kicks I looked and found my '04 qualifies but not a single car I would possibly replace it with qualifies as a replacement. Not even a new V6 Camaro as it doesn't get the magical 22mpg average for new car/light truck

Here is what this program is doing:

Allowing the government to get rid of all the cars they now own that no one bought before.

Hike the demand for used cars by destroying these ones.

Blindfolding the people about where this "government rebate" comes from. Maybe they should be informed it's funded from that big economic stimulus package we're footing the bill for.

I really just don't understand how this program helps. It gets people into car payments they probably cannot afford, so you're going to see car repos like house foreclosures...

I mean someone chime in if I'm off the rocker, but it just seems like we're puppets and Uncle Obama is pulling the strings?!?!?!

My brother in law works for a local chevy dealership and says that they're STILL waiting for the funds from cfc. So all this money put back into the program and they are basicaly eating those $3500-$4500 hits every time till they get those funds, what a joke.

This could be a test run to see the public reaction to getting rid of old (Cash For Clunkers) cars. You'll notice there not all OLD cars just a Government approved fuel consumption! So this will save the planet?
Or keep the tree huggers happy now that they have the Government control back.

Will they raise the fuel consumption bar? Or will they go after cars that were manufactured without cats next?
Just to save the planet you see.

I hear GE is moving there wind turbine ( Blades) manufacturing plant to China!
I see the Chairman took care of the USW for getting him elected...

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say this is the beginning of what's gonna happen.

It will be a progressive thing, first SUV's and trucks, then high performance cars, then your older car will have to be up to so-called standards, or it may be required to meet new fuel consumption standards, if not it will have to go. Next thing you know we will be back to the horse and buggy days.

    This is just my guess.

we are up to 54 cars in or clunkers lot as of today, mind you I work for a company that has 10 different brands at 4 dealerships so do the math we are junking upwards 200+ cars, trucks ,suvs and conversion vans . no one at the dealerships likes it. now consider that the scrap yard are only giving between 50 to 200 apiece for them with useless engines. they can part them or crush them as long as the engine never can be used again. I hate the new "change" government but the ones I blame are the idiots that voted for them in the first place....way to go I would vote for Mccain all over , come no one else saw this coming?

I do not see them going after HP and old cars at all since they are such a small amount of the market segment.

I predict that after next election we will have a Republican president again and we'll get going on the right track. Hopefully we will all still have some rights left by that time.

I hope your right but it's still a long way off and this adminstration is moving at warp speed.

Also I need to get my daughter a nice used car and it's a shame so many good ones are being destroyed

THIS WAS A GOOD DEAL?or was it??
If you traded in a clunker worth $3500, you get $4500 off for an apparent "savings" of $1000.

However, you have to pay taxes on the $4500 come April 15th (something that no auto dealer will tell you). If you are in the 30% tax bracket, you will pay $1350 on that $4500.

So, rather than save $1000, you actually pay an extra $350 to the feds. In addition, you traded in a car that was most likely paid for. Now you have 4 or 5 years of payments on a car that you did not need, that was costing you less to run than the payments that you will now be making.

But wait, it gets even better: you also got ripped off by the dealer.

For example, every dealer in LA was selling the Ford Focus with all the goodies including A/C, auto transmission, power windows, etc for $12,500 the month before the "cash for clunkers" program started.

When "cash for clunkers" came along, they stopped discounting them and instead sold them at the list price of $15,500. So, you paid $3000 more than you would have the month before. (Honda, Toyota, and Kia played the same list price game that Ford and Chevy did).

So lets do the final tally here:

You traded in a car worth: $3500
You got a discount of: $4500
    ---------
    Net so far +$1000

But you have to pay: $1350 in taxes on the $4500

    --------

    Net so far: -$350

And you paid: $3000 more than the car was selling for the month before

    ----------

    Net -$3350

We could also add in the additional taxes (sales tax, state tax, etc.) on the extra $3000 that you paid for the car, along with the 5 years of interest on the car loan, but lets just stop here.

So who actually made out on the deal? The feds collected taxes on the car along with taxes on the $4500 they "gave" you. The car dealers made an extra $3000 or more on every car they sold along with the kickbacks from the manufacturers and the loan companies. The manufacturers got to dump lots of cars they could not give away the month before. And the poor stupid consumer got saddled with even more debt that they cannot afford.

Obama and his band of merry men convinced Joe consumer that he was getting $4500 in "free" money from the "government" when in fact Joe was giving away his $3500 car and paying an additional $3350 for the privilege.
