I know..... I went and checked it out on lunch the other day...it is bad! What if someone was walking up there at the time? Are the stadiums going to fall too?

Those jobs don't always go to the low bidder. The general has the option on going with whomever they want. If they feel that the bid is ridiculously low, they can throw it out. The bidding is to gauge approx price. Its not Bizzaro-ebay.
Also heard that the section that fell didn't have quite enough concrete to lintel overlap, that it was acceptable, but barely. Now that the concrete has shrunk up considerably because of the 3 weeks of < 25* it fell. It shouldn't have by any means, but maybe with a combo of "shrinkage" and heavy truck vibrating it, it shook loose. Thankfully noone hurt. Concrete will shrink alot when the cold persists. Look at a bridge deck joint in the winter and summer. Huge difference. Concrete can take sometimes over a year to fully cure.

Better keep going there bro. For an extreme example, the Hoover dam has not fully cured yet. Basic concrete takes roughly 7 years to fully cure. Driveways and sidewalks and such. Then it begins a deterioration process.

ya think? it is Pittsburgh. I am by no means an engineer, but shouldn't you factor in the worst case scenario then multiply that by 2 or 3 just to be sure??? especially a public place where hundreds or thousands of peeps might be crushed???

I'm with Viper on this one. 99% of the time, the GC will use the low bidder, then go back and beat them up for some more money after the fact.

This is what is says at the bottom of PennDot's bid results every two weeks:

    LOW BIDDER .................................................. .................................................. ....................$74,065,859.67
    SECOND BIDDER............................................ .................................................. ....................$79,454,725.36
SAVINGS TO THE COMMONWEALTH THROUGH COMPETITIVE BIDDING.......$5,388,865.69

I can't help but think every time I see this that it's going to cost double the "savings" to fix the 4uck-ups that these low-ball gypsies are going to create. just my $.02. :D

Yeah, use PennDOTS rationale for what the rest of the construction business does! Dude, PennDot has to answer through the taxpayers for where the taxes are going and why this costs that much etc. When they go with "low bidder" and the "low bidder" ****s the job up, guess what? PennDOT doesn't look bad, the low bidder gets blamed. Now when a private company is the general and their sub ****s up, it reflects on the private co.(general). PennDOT won't go out of business because of half-ass low bidder subs. Private generals will. Its their reputation. Private generals will award the job to whomever they think would do the best job at a reasonable price. My company is rarely the low bidder, but gets tons of work because generals know our work, not because we are the cheapest.

who do you work for? were y'all the sub on the DLLCC? J/K!!!

Your point is well taken about PADOT and private industry. I guess I got off on a tangent because I work with a lot of "low bidders" who try to chisel me down to nothing.

LinKrist Con Co. out of Carnegie (plug) No concrete forms here. All interior, from metal stud/drywall to oak trim, kitchens. Currently downtown 18 floors up with no exterior walls yet! (not part of our work).
Silvernotch works there as well. Its his brother-in-laws co.
