    considering a new job....

well a little breifing......i have turned down 2 job offers in the past couple weeks, and got an unexpected raise again at work....but here is my dilema....a buddy of mine called me and asked me to come work for him and his dad's company. doing similar to what i do now but more in depth as they are more of an engineering firm so id also get certified in all kinds of testing and get to do field work. id like all that....plus it would be a $4,000 a year pay raise. im torn because i like my job, boss been great to me always. but the other job the 4k would help tremendously and it is about a 30 minute drive closer than i am now.

so would you up and leave or consider a friendship and possible continuing education more important than 4k a year raise to start out.

    WWYD?

    YES, another Jared WWYD Thread!

Sounds like a no brainer dude! Closer to home, more money and you'll be subjected to new experiences and certifications that will only benefit you further! I say go for it, or just stay where you're at and you'll eventually start to feel a familiar feeling ! :D

Hmm...hard one...the draftsmen where I work don't get any email or internet access at all....looks like you get to spend a fair amt of time on here and don't catch any flak for it. Guess if you get the same access at the other company it would be worth it though.

As someone once told me, "Do what's best for you. Even if it doesn't make any logical sense, do what is in your best interest."

You can depart from an employer on good/friendly terms. If this new place should not work out for any reason, there may be a chance you could go back. I know of a few people who have "quit" and gone back to their former employeer (but not always the same job).

A $4K/yr increase in salary AND a 30 min closer commute? Might be more like a $5/yr salary increase when you consider gasoline savings.

Working for/with a "buddy" could be potentially awkward should issues arise.

Or, do what you love and the money will follow...

thoughts from a new guy who recently moved his entire life to pittsburgh,,,,,,,
a job is a job, the only reason you work is to make money, in theory. Yes, some jobs have benefits, but in the end it comes down to making money. This new job offers more money, AS WELL AS different experiences to learn from and that means you become a better employee and potentially make more money down the road. It's also closer,,,,, so less in gas on your daily commute and an extra hour of daytime to have for yourself???? your current boss won't hate you for taking a job that is better for you. the old saying, "you gotta look out for yourself!"

Man Jared, we seem to have the same conflicts! I happen to really like my supervisor, but there is only so much they can do for you...although the hard part comes if you have a difference of opinion, it could effect the friendship....alot to think about.....but I would go for it in the end!
