he's probably going to do it for a good week.... the ticking clock is an ole-timer's trick, and it didn't do a darn thing for my puppy..... I have a 16 month old Golden Retreiver, so i went through this not long ago... It started out that my g/f didn't want the puppy to be in our bedroom, so i crated her in the other bedroom, but she would not shut up... i'm pretty decent at just letting things go, but she would howl for 4+ hours and just never stop.... so we brought her into the bedroom next to me on my side of the bed... she would always whine a little right when we went to bed, but i'd stick my hand down by the cage and she'd lick my fingers and lay down - she just wanted to know i was still there...
It'll seem like an eternity, but it will only take a week or two to break him of the crying at night (typically).... after two nights my g/f wanted to give my pup back - lol... but she's great now...
