    The Making of Bullitt

    "The Making Of “Bullitt”
Bullitt is arguably one of the best car-centric movies of all time. It rivals all the dazzling special effects, big budgets, and star-heavy modern day movies with a gritty realism that would be impossible to replicate today. One reason is that the two real stars of the movie (aside from Steve McQueen) was the ’68 Ford Mustang fastback and the ’68 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum.

This behind-the-scenes video found by Autofocus gives a sneak-peek into what went into making this movie.

The main reason this movie has stood the test of time is its 10-minute long epic car chase. The car chase was real, and McQueen teamed up with famous stunt driver Bill Hickman to drive speeds in excess of 100 mph down the streets of San Francisco. It took 8 other stunt drivers operating various vehicles to make the scene complete and to happen safely. Even so, there is an inherent risk of launching cars off steep hills. Wheels, axles, suspension parts could have flown off at any moment, sending the car hurtling out of control.

But even though that did happen, it likely won’t ever happen again. Imagine San Francisco agreeing to a rematch between the modern Mustang and Challenger? Unlikely. McQueen was committed to making the race as real as possible, and he spent plenty of time training with Hickman for the race at local racetracks. That certainly is commitment, putting your own life on the line for a movie."

You have to admit that Bullet was one of the most realistic car movies. Unlike movies today, like Gone in 60 Seconds, where the jumps, etc... destroys a car in the shooting process. I'm sure Bullet had some carnage but, nothing totally out of realty.

    I don't recall the 7ups.

Anyone seen "The Driver" with Ryan O'Neil?
    http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0077474/

The action on "Ronin" was pretty realistic too.

In the chase scene in Bullit McQueen goes around a corner and you can see the wheel fold under the car. It broke a ball joint I heard. In another part of the chase McQueen overshot a turn. That was unscripted, but they left it in.

Don't forget the original Gone in 60 seconds from 1974 too. The main character played by HB Halicki, who also did all his own stunts, broke his back jumping the 73 Mustang in the movie. He was killed in an accident filming the sequel. That's my personal favorite. The new Gone in 60 seconds sucked compared to the old one.

I liked all the car movies mentioned, especially White Lightning. 70's car movies just kick ass in general.

I do remember that scene in Bullet.

I was talking about the new version (Gone in 60 sec) with the giant jump scene crap.

Warren Oates is great. Probably the most realistic movie ever made.

Return to Macon County, with Don Johnson and Nick Nolte is also pretty good.

Anyone remember when SPEED used to show all these B movies?

That's back before FOX bought, and ruined, SPEED.
