I don't know from experience but I find it hard to believe that with all the light weight housing and hardware options for the 9" that you can't build one considerably lighter then your typical 9"? Possibly lighter then an 8.8 when it is all said and done? I guess we will find out! Not sure what I am going to do with the housing width just yet...

physically a 9 inch can be lighter with fab style housing but take more power to turn them over a typical 8.8. but the gain in strength outweighs the loss in drag due to gear set.

8.8 is a weak link. I have bent mine which is now braced up. Every set of gears is nice and quiet during the breakin. Then they get noisy after I hit them with slick launches. I had one set that was chipped. I am not the only one other there that has had issues with the gears not holding up. I use a solid pinion spacer.

A 9" has a 3rd pinion bearing instead of 2 like the 8.8. I think that is where my problems arises. There is not doubt that something is flexing under load with the 8.8.

Then you get into the talk of the weight and robbing power with a 9". I would think that a pinion that is not binding due to the additional support would be more efficient.

When I replace my 8.8 I will get a Fab9 Housing with the anti roll bar and brace. Nodular Case, 3.50 gear, 35 spline axles, and the new wavtrac differential.

It may weight a little more, but I will never worry about crap exploding again.

If I was doing one for a drag car I would consider 40spl gun drilled axles with a lightweight spool and a pro-gear gear set.

I have many 9” setups laying around if you want to take one to compare. Buy light weight spool, sheet metal housing, and aluminum 3rd member.

I just don't have the time, experience or tooling to tackle this part of the project. I wanted it done right the first time by a proffesional who specializes in this kind of work. This car is going to be fast and it needs to be safe. Besides, it's nice not having it in the way at the shop
