Want what you can have, not what you cant.
The 4 cylinder transmission will bolt up to a V-8 bell housing but you will need a different pilot bearing. The 4 cylinder transmission has a smaller diameter input shaft where it fits in the pilot bearing.
How long it will last is up to you and your driving habits. Just remember that the transmission was built to take the power of a small engine. It will be the weak link of the drive line. If you don't put it under the pressure and power of the V-8 engine it will last a long time. If you push it you brake it. I'm putting a V-8 in my 4 cylinder fox and I'm going to run the smaller transmission to get by until I find a better heavy duty trans.
ive seen 4 banger trannys hold up better than v8 trannys...hit or miss
The 87-88 TurboCoupe, and 90's 4 cyl fox stang transmitions ARE the world class ones. They just got a deeper first gear ratio (3.97), and the input shaft is smaller. No difference, one is not stronger than the other!! the 4 bell housing to trans bolts are the same as well, so no adapter is needed there. The pilot bearing can be used out of a festiva (1989?) or (?)ranger(?) for the input shaft to work in the v8 motor. Dan, what year 4 cyl car is this coming out of?
