I think for an out of the box non-SLR digital, Sony is hard to beat. I have a new Sony DSC-HX1 and I love it. The standard settings make it so just about anyone can take good tack sharp pics while you can be as creative as desired with all the adjustable settings as well. I have compared several pics from this camera to the ones taken with my Canon D-SLR and they are close enough to make me want to leave the SLR at home. It's nice not to have to lug that large camera around.

You can get the T1i for 809.xx at Newegg.

Girlfriend bought it, and if you want a Camera, get a CAMERA. Canon all the way.

I want to get a T1i also, but cant justify spending the money when I have no job lol

My HX1 was $399 on Amazon with free shipping.

Nothing wrong with a D-SLR, I have one. I don't like to carry something that large around at events along with all the lenses etc.., so I find it being left at home a lot more now.

you could get a nikon d70 for like 300 bucks. myuncle has one. it took this picture.

learn how to use exposure settings shutter speeds and all that fun stuff at a beginners level or you could use the auto focus mode.

Not much else I have to add. If you're into photography or would like to have nicer pictures at the expense of convenience/portability, I'd push you towards a digital slr camera. I've had a canon rebel xt and a canon 40d, and they're both great. The ability to change lenses also means that you're not limited by the body as much as you are limited by your glass (and ability). The only time that I've found it beneficial to tote around a big camera body & big lens was at the autoshow. People get the hell out of your way.

What did you intend to use the camera for?

Only other advice I can give is to check out the models you've narrowed it down to out at best buy & see how they feel to you. (for instance, I find Nikon ergonomics/funcions to be crappy/unintuitive - so I'm very happily a canon user).

On a pocket camera, make sure you take a look at the zoom range - they're not all created equal. If you're looking into a wide angle, check out the sony line up. Canon's tend to have better zoom however.

good luck. oh, and if you find a deal that looks too good to be true... it is

Comsumer reviews are nice to have, but are often sketchy. Try to read up on reviews done by professional critics, or better yet, read about some cameras and do what Bo said, go to Best buy, walmart or somewhere else and try them for yourself.

I was on a pretty strick budget for a new camera and thursday I bought a Kodak Easyshare and for 110 bucks it seems real good so far .

Agreed, like anything you read, take it with a grain of salt. Just like you need to ask yourself if the articles in 5,0 & MMFF are written for an advertiser, what printed in magazines, broadcast on tv or the internet isn't always the last word. With that said, you can still use the reviews to weed out some of the less desirable models.

I was always a SLR user in the past before digital. I love the quality of the images with digital SLR's but, it's just not MY spending priority at this time. You can take some damned fine pictures with a decent digital camera. Good photography sense in shot composition & lighting still apply. For the money, a good prosumer superzoom is hard to beat for versatilty & capabilty. I use a several year old Canon S3 IS. It has more features than I can use or remember and still shots a darned good shot when used properly. Buy what you want & can afford, then spend your time learning to shot good pictures. Good luck!

I wear cargo pants every day and open carry very often as well. I never leave the house without my trusty digi-cam so that I can take pictures in case of an LEO encounter. The cargo pants allow me to drop my inexpensive companion camera in the cargo pocket and go. I buy inexpensive Kodak slim cameras. My current is the Kodak M1033 with HD Video. I paid $139. It takes great pictures, cost is so low that that it with me from the moment I get dressed to the moment I take my pants off to go to sleep.

I have been through the $1500 SLR camera phase, and while at Mardi-Gras a few years back a beer was kicked on the balcony above and ruined my $1500 camera. From then on I decided that my cameras would be practical and tactical. Inexpensive yet functional. I know to the photo-buffs out there, this will make them cringe... but the sub $150 Kodaks are tanks and really take fine pictures. If ya break it, smash it, or jump in the lake with it..... you throw it way and move the memory card to your new one. No tears, no emotions, just replace it and carry on.
