For a high end point and shoot I would suggest a Panasonic FZ28/FZ38.... The FZ38 is the new model with added stereo sound and some other things... both shoot HD video, both have an awesome Lecia 18x OIS lens. I have an FZ28 and love it

Begin by saying that I do understand that we all have different tastes. I am just defending my own personal point of view, and in no way expect all of you to live/act/feel how I do about anything.......For a high end point and shoot I would suggest a Panasonic FZ28/FZ38
That camera breaks every law I now live by for cameras! That think is not a camera that you drop in your pocket every morning, every day, no matter what. It is much too large.
That camera is not priced in such a way that breaking one or two a year is nearly meaningless to you. Break 2-3 a year and your talking a grand.
That camera is one to buy for when your wanting an affordable alternative to a real SLR. Do you remember the old Minolta Dimage7i? I had that one. Very similar concept, only the Dimage 7i was about 8 years ago and $1400. Too large for practical carry other than special occasions.
I like the KODAK brand software, and with the newer one I got (because I flipped my kayak while having my old Kodak in my shorts pocket) this summer... I can get some really nice shots.
Let me brag a bit:
These are all the same little slim line, pocket fitting, $139 Kodak M1033. The various pictures are under drastically varrying lighting conditions, and all letting the camera software decide the settings at will. Kodak has some pretty good software in these newer pocket rockets!
