    Mater/Chevy ppl - 4.8's any good?

I'm looking at picking up a little run-around 2wd truck. Are the 1999 chevy 4.8's any good? Any problem area's I should know about if they are the first model year?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info....I'm guessing the manifolds will leak over time and when replacing gaskets the rusty bolts just snap off in the heads? (97+ fords are known to have this problem)

Yeah i have a 92 suburban with at 350 at one point alll the bolts came off the passenger side and just leaked like maddd. and i dont know if they will have it too but the passenger side of the engine in the manifold there is a little bolt on top of the header, i think its for a block heater but not completely sure what it does but ours kept falling out cause some dumbass cross threaded it and it would fire flames out of it about 3 inches. started to melt the air intake hose

I'd just go with the 5.3 John. The mpg is about the same and the power is much better. I have the 5.3 in my 08 GMC 4x4 and the power is nice and the mileage is about 17, city and i get about 21 to 25 on the highway. I have 3:73s also.

BTW the truck already has 36.000 miles on it and i haven't had any problems what so ever.

Ya...i test drove the truck today and it ran just fine. If I want to go fast I'll take a different vehicle, not my winter beater. :)

It does need a couple things though (bad oil leak near back of block) and front brakes....so I'm going to think about what I want to do....
