People barely pay attention to bikes as it is and if a bike sounding like a moped cant be heard more than likely stupid people that are too busy talking or texting on there cell phones while driving wont see you. Thats why i like my bike loud that way they might not see my at first but they will hear me and then take notice.

I like the look of it in pics but after I saw them in person(z&m) when I was looking for a cruiser my opion went 180 degrees. To ME they look cheaply made and like fordman said the chrome looks like plastic. And they were very very quiet.

Scott, most of the chrome is plastic. My buddy showed me himself. For him it was cheap, looked decent, and is HONDA reliable was his thing I took from talking with him about it. IDK. It does look decent to me but what do I know. And yes, I agree in the loud pipes help people see you. Nobody pays attention to bikers to busy texting and fixing their face.

Troll the price thing was hilarious. and I agree with Philly on what he said. Everybody likes what they like for whatever reason. It's your right as a human being. I think competition makes every product better. Look at the pony car wars.

Studies have shown that most hazards to a motorcyclist occur in front of you and up to about 30 degrees to either side (between "10 and 2"). With loud pipes pointing backward, the sound is concentrated in a far less effective direction.

Good safety comes from improving your skills and doing your best to mitigate the inherent hazards (smaller profile than a car, less overall protection, people not looking for you, etc...).

    In other words...

(edit - graphic is not directed at you or your riding skills, but the "loud pipes save lives" fallacy in general)

    LOL... i love it!

i agree 100% - the loud pipes are a safety thing is such a crock of crap.... its a silly excuse for old men wanting to make a ruckus and having a motorcycle that is entirely way too loud.... its rediculous actually - you hear some atrociously loud motorcycle and look over expecting to see someone screaming through town, running from the cops... and you see a guy doing 15mph

Not saying HD's aren't cool... i like most all bikes... but i can't stand how loud some of them are... it doesn't help that i have very sensitive hearing - super loud noise just doesn't agree with me

    That shirt is awesome!!! Hahaha

Any rider at anytime could get hit by someone else and I have persoanlly seen where someone was rear end and killed at a stoplight on rt 30 in greensburg becaise the lady was too busy looking in the backseat and yelling at the kids. And no loud pipes wouldn't of saved him, I'm just saying anything can happen to any ride no matter how good of a ride he or she is.

What ultimately sucks for us is that since we have less protection while riding we have to rely on the intelligance of other people driving a lot more than when we are in a car..

this is the confusing part for me. yeah, I'd love to have a Harley again. maybe, I'm a cheapass, but it's more that I don't want to pay 15K for 50 year-old technology. I'd gladly pay the same price (say 11 or 12K) as a metric cruiser with better everything. I just don't wan't to pay 3-4K MORE for a name on the gas tank.

BUT, most people do. I don't understand why? Like you said earlier about the marketing and the hype... what is it? Yeah, I'd like to support a so-called American company, but not just for that reason. No wonder they roll out "new" models that is the same old softail with diff. handlebars and gas tank shape. Hell, if my customers were stupid enough to think it's a new model and pay extra for it, I'd do it all day long, too.

I think it is a combination of thoughts...

    1. "If it's not broke, don't fix it" - Many people just love HD's for what they are. Look at the VRod... In all reality it is HD's most technologically advanced bike and has the worst sales. Many HD enthusiasts don't even consider it a "true" Harley.
    2. Set in their ways - Most HD riders are older and don't want to change because that is what they grew up with
    3. Older riders couldn't afford HD's years ago, but can now and since they have the cash to do so, that is the bike they go for.
    4. American made
    5. When someone says, "what kind of bike you have"... to the average person when they hear "Harley", it means something

    Just my thoughts...

You make a good point about the vrod. Every time I see one, I just think "meh?".

You can find used ones with low miles for good prices. Personally, I don't like their style. The motor is phenomenal, though and the suspension and brakes are top-notch compared to Pappy's models.

Maybe I'm just a dumb consumer, but I really don't like metric cruisers. I don't argue that in nearly every way they are probably superior to h-d,(except resale value) but I guess I'm just a purist. After doing the softail route, when the time comes I have free time again, I'll buy a H-D bagger and be happy to pay for a harley.

don't believe the hype. I paid 8 for my '06 1200 custom and traded it in a year later for 6. looking at used prices on cl, doesn't look like any of them hold their value. but again, if you start at 15 and re-sale for 10, I guess that's holding better value than buying at 10 and resaling for 5. LOL!

Yes. I drank the kool-aid for a while. I'm happy with the machine, however any late-model 600 would run circles around this thing. After a short trip to Z&M this afternoon and getting up close and personal with some of the "new" models, I'll keep the Buell for a while... maybe trade it on a CB1000R if they ever bring it to the states!!!

and you can buy a metric for 13 and resale for 7.. Esp a rocket. Buy a 600 for 10 and get a trade in value of 3500 the next year. Thats what deal they were giving a kid when i bought my harley.

It's not as badass in stock trim, but it wouldn't take much to look like that pic: http://powersports.honda.com/2011/cb1000r.aspx

FZ1's ain't bad either if they could keep the weight down...

    Yes that was entertaining ....

I say pictures are worth 1000 words ....

    1960's-1970's Jap Cruiser

    1980's Jap Cruiser

2000's Jap Cruiser (HD's most successful years)

    1960's HD

    2011 HD

Yep Jap maker's kept true to their design and didn't copy anything off of HD ...

Agree that is pretty wicked looking! But why does it look so similar to a Buell?

to be fair sportsters have probably the worst resale value of the harley line (although v-rods are probably close). that cbr is wild looking
