Inkdcountryboy, what do you know about some older style quad carbs?
Got a real bastard on my hands..one minute the bike runs fine, next minute it feels like its not feeding enough fuel to the engine..When starting out, you gotta' rev it to the moon to get it going..between 15-2500 RPMS it feels like its bogging out, but once it gets a little higher it smooths out, and then past 6-7k it doesnt wanna rev any higher(redline is 9k, never could get it there)..I know its a fuel issue, changed my plugs even tho the old ones looked amazing. Not afraid to pull the carbs off, but not real sure about ripping them apart..I'm used to 1 carb, lol, not 4. Especially syncing them when throwing them back together. Heard a lot of older honda owners soaking them in pine sol, heard it works real well..Was told its probably a clogged jet? I ran a bottle of Lucas Injector Cleaner, the tune up in a bottle stuff..ran amazing for about an hour then started falling on it's face again..starting to really irritate me..let me know whatcha' think, or anyone else for that matter..Trying to save the most money I can, lol. Going to try a 1/4 can of sea foam tomorrow and let it idle in the driveway for a while, dont wanna ride it in the shape its in in case I break down somewhere..be screwed.

project - is there a correlation between it "running fine" and the engine being cold?
EDIT - and how rusty is the inside of the gas tank?
Carbs need cleaned, sync'd and id be willing to bet theres a crack in one of the rubber boots.... while you have it running spray some starting fluid on each rubber boot from carb to motor..

I never ride it cold. I let it sit and run for at least 12-15 minutes before heading out..always touch/wave my hand around the head to make sure shes warm. Tank really isn't that bad, fairly nice condition, will have to look further into that though..Kind of though the tank might not be venting right?
You devil you, there is a tiny crack in the air box to the first carb but is sealed up with gasket sealer. Can't feel any "suction" when i lay my hand or a peice of paper against the crack...Will try those steps within the next day or two, celebrating the new job with some Evan williams and miller lite

speaking of stupid car drivers rear ending bikes.. I saw this shirt at zepkas and had to buy it
Canadian Spec 89 GS500 made it to the stable tonight to keep my US Spec 95 GS500 company.
Will post pics when I get a chance after work. Riding it home brought back some good time memories on my other GS500.
Definately going to do a frame-off this winter on it, freshen up the head, and if I'm feeling really ambitious try to get fuel injection working on it.
Picked up an oil filter today so I could do some driving on fresh oil. The guy who owned it before me must have never changed it in his ownership. Oil was black as tar and the oil filter had what I can only describe as "strands of crud" on it. You know when I filter is well past its usefulness and every loose fiber has crud on it? Yeah, like that.
I think I'm going to do an oil change every 500km for the next 2 or 3 changes to try and get as much sludge out as I can.
Upcoming plans include doing a valve check/adjustment (working on this bike is stupid simple... should have that done in about an hour tops) and then a compression test so I know what I'm dealing with so that when the snow comes. When I do the frame off I'll know whether I'm just doing a port and polish on the head with some more aggressive cams or if I'm doing stuff to the bottom end as well.
My two GS500's. The 89 on the left I just got. The guy before me had a big DC sticker on the one side of the gas tank. Guess what was under it when I took it off. Yep, a few bad scratches. Oh well its a 21 year old bike in pretty good condition for what it is so I cant bitch.
anybody want to talk about motorcycles today?
last Saturday, I was convinced I was trading my Buell in for a used 2004 Night Train at Z&M. I even took my title and checkbook with me.
1st off, the Buell talked it's way out of getting traded as soon as we left the house. It ran better than it ever has... get to Z&M, check out the '04 with 5,xxx miles. It's a little rough. Well, for me it is. For 5K, it just had some wear where I didn't think it should. Then, the salesman started telling me all about Night Trains as if I didn't know. I told him when I'm ready to write the check, I'll come and get him, then I walked out.
The Buell is safe for another season, I think.
