i forgot to tell a story about marks project.. Its been talked about to enough people and i had a visitor i met at cabela's in wv.. and he just had to come up to see the bike in the works. His name is Big he worked/s for cycle source.. he was writing articles for them when it was a 1/2 page flyer.. He been talking to me a good bit.. were gonna do some riding together this summer... but im pretty sure marks little bobber will be in cycle source.. he also gave me some old school ideas from when he was building old iron heads and shovelheads (which he still owns a shovel head) .. if the frame wasnt already built he gave me a secret how to split the motor/trans from each other on a sporty. but the money invested would be crazy for a custom primary setup.. but trust me it was a honor when a old school rider/writer digs a bike being built in my garage..

Question Can I man up for 5000 miles in 8-9 days?

So I'm contemplating this road trip at the end of May .......

A friend of mine who always has these fantastic stories from his iron butt runs invited me to participate in a 8-9 day 5,000 mile ride. It sounds fantastic as the destinations would be Northwest Angle Minnesota and Key West Florida the furthest points North and South in the lower 48 states. Also we would pretty much hit every state from the Mississippi river east which would play into my ultimate goal of riding in every state. My only concern is can I handle that much riding in such a short amount of time. Up to this point the longest I've ridden in one day was from Pittsburgh to Virginia Beach which was about 8 hours but only 500 miles. I did this easily with a passenger and a ton of luggage which I wouldn't have on this ride. I'm a traveling salesman so I'm conditioned to "drive" a car 6-8 hours a day no problem and I love riding but can I ride 8-10 hours a day for 8-9 days straight?

Here's a rough idea of the route .....

My dad and a buddy went from Greensburg to Bonneville and back in this tub in 2008. No windows, no roof, no support vehicle, and one duffle bag of clothes. Dad was almost 60 at the time with a bad back/knees and sat on basically a pad over the floor boards for about 5500 miles. He made it back in one piece... that bagger of yours is a luxury vehicle compared to this!

    Mark,

That would be a kick ass trip, ya gotta do it. That is one of those things that if you let it pass by, you kick yourself for not doing it when ya had the chance.

I recently read a story about a guy doing 1,000 miles in 24 hours. Can't remember where it was... I think in the back of a Sport Rider from last fall... He took pictures of his odometer and GPS with a "certified" time stamp on his camera when he started and finished.

I'll be the first to tell ya, I'm a fair weather rider... when it becomes uncomfortable or downright painfull, it just ain't fun anymore and bikes are supposed to be fun, IMO.

But, doing whatever it is YOU (in general) want to do is fun, too. Be careful if you do it. Get plenty of sleep and stay out of the booze!

    O m g ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Watch this! I've never owned a 4-stroke single, but I've had plenty of 2-strokes from the late 70's, early 80's and I have experienced this. If you dig all bikes and a decent little artsy fartsy 20-minute movie, then go get a beer and get ready to be entertained. If you are an 80HD (<<< yes that's a joke), hyper individual that needs instant gratification then drag the stick to 11:20. However, the little journey it takes you on is worth it.

I've been laughing for 2 days.

hahahaha That reminded me of this big sale we did at Bentely's on 250f's. We sold 30+ one day and by the end of the day those mfers were hard to start for the first time out of the crate.
