Considering saleing my TDI VW and getting a 2.3 turbo fox. But I'm having a hard time finding 1. Anybody ever change over a regular 2.3? Also how good are they on gas?

I never converted one, but as long as it's tuned well (ie - Motorcraft parts) and you keep your foot out of it you'll be pleasantly surprised about the mpg. My Turbo Coupe was getting around 24mpg driving into Downtown Pittsburgh everyday.

The 2.3T cars do exceptionally well on the highway but take a big hit around town. When my TurboCoupe was my DD, I could get very high 20's on the highway, but would drop to high teens/low 20's around town, then go to the track and run low 13's.
Converting an existing car to turbo is best done with an engine donor. The factory turbo cars have all the right parts, adding a turbo to a NA car will get ugly pretty fast.
The issue with the 2.3T cars as drivers is their history. The last one's where built in '89 so they are all over 20 years old, most of the cars "tried" to be advanced. SVO's are full of quirky stuff that you need and some of it can;t get (passenger marker light), the Turbo Coupes where loaded luxury cars with all kinds of electronic do dads to fail, and the Merkurs where rather unique. The harnesses in them are old, the engine management is archaic, and you really can't look at them as "bolt on" cars. Most of us that are into them do our own thing and like them for that but it's not for everyone for sure.
I did a fox 2.3t swap and it gets aronud 28mpg on highway driving normal, but if yo get into it alot its about 20mpg. Its alot of fun to drive
a 2.3t daily would be a fun ride

I really, really want to swap my 93 2.3L LX, but everything I've read makes it look really tough. I'm an "OK" shadetree mechanic, but this looks like a rough job for an amateur.

Thanks. I'm still considering it. But going from nearly 50mpg to 25mpg is a big change.
