Like a Mustang Cobra Jet, Only Not
The even better—and far more expensive—news for Raptor fans is the simultaneous debut of the Raptor XT, a realization of the truck’s potential in the same vein of the track-only Mustang Cobra Jet.
Ford says the Raptor XT is basically the same truck that raced in the 2008 Baja 1000, only with a full interior. That means an estimated 500 hp from a modified version of the 6.2-liter V-8; suspension travel further enhanced from 11 and 12 inches front and rear to 15 and 18 inches, respectively; a roll cage; and “extensive skid-plating.” There are also tubular front and rear bumpers (all the better to explode cactus with, my dear) and bead-lock wheels and 37-inch tires to better endure extreme abuse.
Inside, though, the Raptor XT retains power windows, air conditioning, and the factory seats—albeit with five-point racing harnesses—so you can blitz the desert in comfort. While an F-150 is certainly no Rolls-Royce, compared to the usual off-road race interior, the only thing missing seems to be a champagne fridge and shock-mounted flute holders.
Sadly, the Raptor XT’s onslaught of awesome won’t be legal for use on public roads. It’s off-road only, just 50 will be made, and it’ll cost $99,950. But there are few more-affordable ways to capably pre-run next year’s Baja 1000.
