Hi Lou,
I bought a blemished Hobart 175 mig a few years back for $400, a 220v machine. It does what I need in the shop. I'd recommend the biggest machine you can afford in 220v. You can get better penetration with the getter amperage. The newer 187 & 210 models are pretty slick for the price. My Hobart has been fine but, I know pro's that use Lincoln & Miller too. There's a lot of personal preference involved in the brands. I'm not a fan of the flux core welds, I see too much porosity. I'd have to agree with 2000 Ultra Z on the 220v being easier to get a good weld for an amateur like me.

Whatever you do stay away from the blue versions of lincoln electric(red case) migs that harbor freight sells.
The internal hardware is plastic instead of metal and it broke before I could use it one time. You can't tighten the plastic down enough for it to feed the wire. At least I couldn't.
I've been using my Lincoln Electric 110 (plugs into extension cords) gas shielded for over 4 years and it kicks ass.
It was only about 300-400 brand new at home depot. Seriously satisfied.
