    Clutches

I started thinking, in light of what Bimini posted about his clutch not holding his power level, what are guys like Uwanrunit running in there cars that have close to the power that Bimini is running. As far as I know alot of the Cobra guys haven't swapped clutches in their cars. I really haven't looked into it yet, but what streetable clutch is better than my Spec stage 3?

Get with Wally @ Pro-Motion and he can set you up with the right clutch for your needs.

I agree with the Wally comment, good guys at Pro Motion.
Also, do you have a Spec 3 (which is 6-puck style) or the 3+ (full face agressive material, rated higher with better pedal feel)? I've had both, like the 3+ much better but the regular 3 isn't bad, just slips less for the street/more on/off.
To be honest, the best clutch at these power levels is a twin disk, just they usually require a matching flywheel and are expensive.
Last, no Cobra here is at my power level :), I make 660rwhp on my 6# wastegate spring ;)

I believe its the full face style, from what I can remember when I installed it. I bought it from MikeyMustang who claimed it was good for almost 800ftlbs. It definately doesn't feel like it slips much, more like a light switch.

Remember now, Mike also welded that clutch to the flywheel. I think it was the one you have in your car too.

The one Mike welded to the flywheel I put in my old car. I put 12k miles on it with 12psi boost and a 125 shot of spray.

I have had great luck with the Ram powergrip HD, my car is pretty heave and I hit the tires very hard. I had the trans out last year and it still looked great after about 60 passes.

Mike did have a three plus in his car the last I knew. The answer is in the face, four or 6 puck is stage 3 (they actually make both), full faced is 3+

You will get so many different opinions on this topic, my preference is the Ram Powergrip HD. The biggest thing I see at the shop is 50% of the cars that come in with aftermarket adjusters are not being adjusted properly and are out of adjustment. Clutch wont live long that way...

I don't think you can judge on what J's results were... he said he's got over 900rwtq, and that clutch is only good for 850 fwtq... the 3+ is a great clutch... it's what i had in my T/A and it was putting 700rwtq to the ground nicely...

as J said, the only good option for upwards of 800rwtq is probably a twin disk cluch ... i've always heard great things about McLeod twin disk clutches...

Not saying a 3+ isn't rated for 850FWHP but I don't see how it could be. I toasted one in a couple of months with a little over 400 to the tires...

I run a "Kustom" clutch from Walt at Pro Motion. It doesn't chatter and is easily slipped for daily driving. This is the clutch he puts in a lot of real street racers cars. It has worked flawlessly in my car. As Mike said though clutch adjustment is KEY and its amazing how just a little bit of mis-adjustment can lead to missed gears, or smoked clutches. Walt recommends checking the clutch adjustment after every run at the track as it swells when it heats up, he also HIGHLY suggests that you not do a burnout while holding the brakes on... like I do. He will be the first to say a line lock is a MUST for any mustang at the strip. We smoked this same clutch in my dad's 11 second NA '91GT and it was due to a bad adjustment on our part.

Walt also talked me out of a twin disc, even when I put my turbo on as he said they have a good pedal feel but they are more like an on-off switch than a marsel's equipped single diaphragm clutch. I hate spec clutches, everyone I ever drove was a damn on-off switch, and that included the stage 2. My setup takes a bit of getting used to as I needed as much air gap as I could possibly get in order for my old school TKO to go into gear above 6000rpms and I had to go with Pro-Motions quick release quadrant which has a different ramp rate than most quadrants on the market which makes the on-off feel of the clutch that much worse, but mine is still easily slipped by me.

I have a LM disc with Centerforce II pressure plate. It works fine for what I do. If I raced the car regularly on slicks I would probably do the Ram or a twin disc setup.
