That's a great story!
A good friend Rear Adm Russell Roletter flew Corsairs in the south Pacific during WWII he told he some amazing stories, He also flew F4U Corsairs and Cougars (jet) in Korea was shot down broke his hip ejecting his last Cat (CV66 USS America) shot was 1980 in a A7 CorsairsII. He retired from flying and became a member of the navy board of Acceptance to the naval academy He's still alive and well living in Arizona..
Most of the old WWII warriors are gone but i have a very special D-day Veteran living with me my Dad. He landed on Omaha Beach then on to the Ardennes Forest and the battle of the Bulge where he was wounded in action.

Not a P-51 but a F4U-G Corsair, back in the 80s a good friend bought a basket case / parts plans from Honduras hauled it to Zellie airport and over 4 years and hundred of thousands of dollars and a group of volunteers the old War Bird came back to life! Here's the plane..
I have a video from the first day we went to Zellie with Adm Roletter dressed in his WWII flying uniform to visit Joe and the Corsair in the early stages of the restoration, The look on Adm Roletter face when he climbed up on the wing brought back the old days! I have to get the vid converted so I can post it.

My Dad also had 3 brothers in WWII at the same time one was a tank commander, one was Hermann Görings guard (MP) at the Nuremberg trials, the other was in the Berlin airlift. 4 brothers in WWII at the same time..
Remind you of a movie?
