If you plan on hooking, the 1st mod would be weld on subs. Verts flex a good bit.

Would this also help to alleviate wheel hop? Is this something I could do myself, I can weld, or is there more involved than merely welding after the appropriate prep work?

If your a good welder you should have no problem. The hardest part for most is being able to get the car high enough and completely level sitting with the weight on the tires. A drive on lift is the best way to go. Never weld them on with the car not loaded on the suspension. These will not help wheel hop.
