    416 LS3 Build - Part 2 - I Love You Bo :)

Got everything back from the machine shop.

Had the Diamond Pistons coated by Calico

CT-2 Thermal Barrier Coating - Piston tops

CT-3 Dry Film Lubricating Coating - Piston Skirts

Bearings are also coated by Calico

CT-1 Dry Film Lubricating Coating - Bearings

Mic the pistons and check piston/cylinder clearance.

The piston manufacturer (Diamonds, in this instance) specifies precisely where you are to measure piston diameter, and also the required piston/cylinder clearance.

Here we are measuring .850 down from the oil ring on the skirt, 90 degrees from the pin:

All 8 pistons came in at 4.058

    .0055, just what Diamond specified

2.0991.......ALL of them...this is a very nice piece

Checked the big ends of the Callies rods. Very nice. All within spec. Actually they were all the very same dimension. I am very impressed with this Callies stuff.

Next I checked 2 of the rods, torqued, with rod bearings in them, with the dial bore indicator. Appears we have .0017 rod bearing clearance. I took the mic that I used to mic the rod journals and these 2 rods to the machinist to double check. Yep, .0017 rod bearing clearance.

Decided to check them with Plastigage as well

Block will be relieved slightly at the bottom of each cylinder where the rod bolt comes close:

So the block is back at the machine shop now for decking. We are shooting for an average of about -.011.

With a compressed head gasket thickness of .051, that will put the quench at around .040.

That's probably beyond my skill level. I'm pretty good at picking up dropped tools, bolts, nuts and holding beers .... that's about it!

Yep Gregg is like Rain-man when it comes to motors! Half the time he's talking I'm completely lost .. not hard to do BTW.

Why not get the bearings coated and THEN check the clearance to see where you're at......instead of getting the bearings coated AND the block cut at the same time.

    Or...

Get some .001 oversize brgs to bring you to .0015 and call it a day.

I could easily do a .001+ bearing an be done.

I 100% want my bearings coated.

The main bores were 2.752" Spec is 2.750"

Redoing the align hone will give me a little more crush as well.

The coating thickness is only ~.00025"

I ASSume by the marks on the deck, you have checked all 8 holes, 4 places for deck height off the piston? If i'm reading the number right they look pretty close. Why I ask, several of the 2.3 crowd have had issues with Diamond pistons being up to .010 out of parallel to the deck and Diamond reports that as their tolerance. Your look close ...

We were real happy with the Diamonds.

The only piston that was slightly different was the reluctor wheel piston.

It sat in the hole about .002" more than the rest. Not to bad.

The assembly and block was fairly square as well.

Decking .010 off one side and .008 off the other.
