    Humbling experience...

I spent the last few days dealing with a kidney stone. Being a former athlete I always think I can tough out most anything. Wrong!!! The pain from this kidney stone literally bought me to my knees. I originally had my first attack on January 3rd. I thought I had made it relatively well until last night. I was never so glad to see the emergency room & morphine! I spent the night & had a stint (drain tube) inserted this morning. What a relief to be able to go again. It turns out I have an 8mm or .314" diameter stone. It's hard to imagine something the size of a pea popping out the end of your pecker...

Well, I go back for an out-patient pocedure on Monday to have the stone pulverized. I have to go back to the office later in the week to have the stint removed.

It's funny how medical treatment can humble you. There's nothing like walking around bare-assed in a hospital gown & being place spread eagle on the operating table...

It sure is nice to be home.

I work at a hosiptal and deal with people with kidney stones all the time! I am an x-ray tech. Women say they would rather have another baby than a kidney stone. I also do the lythotripsies in the OR which will be breaking up your stone. Good luck that part is not so bad. Its when you pass the pieces!

Sand? HAHA If you are lucky. More like razor blades. Anyways, drink a ton of water. Nothing worse than peeing and one coming then running out of urine.

    Bossman,

An overnight stay is too long to suit me. I can't imagine spending 15 days in the hospital. I don't know how anyone can get better with the nurses waking you every couple of hours to check vitals and the noise of the patients etc...

Ron, my stones are doing just fine...

Hopefully I'm done hugging the porcelain!

I've had 3 so far... nothing fun about any of them. The last one I was on the bathroom floor for 2 hours till I could get up and call someone for help.

thats true if you want to get rest dont be in a hospital. i had a 3.5 inch tumor removed from my small intestine and my large intestine blew out in three places so i had emergency surgery for 7 hours and then almost went septic again three days later. i owe a lot to some good docs and nurses.would not want to go thru that again. i still need another surgery to put things back together

    Wow,

that's terrible, I hope you're on the mend. If you stop & look around, put things into perspective, you can always fnd someone worse off than yourself... Be sure to get good care, that's some serious illness!

In the summer of 08 my mom went into septic shock due to a kidney stone blocking one of her kidneys. The hospital initially thought it was the flu, with 12 hrs of being rushed there she was in the ICU where she stayed for 5 weeks, then out, then back in. For about 10 days she was in an induced coma, while they fought to keep all her other organs from failing. In all it was about 6 months in the hospital/nursing home. She's home now about 80lbs thinner, able to walk again, 90% use of her hands and stone free. Like others have said, it really puts things into perspective. Health insurance is a big topic, don't let it sway your view of what nurses and doctors do everyday to help loved ones, I can't thank some of them enough.
