Let's talk about buffing and waxing

So I'm always one to keep my vehicles looking great, but I will admit, I really know nothing about buffing or compounds or glazes and polishes. I'm heavy with the clay bar then usually a good wax.

I guess my questions really are:

Whats a good buffer to buy? I've seen porter cables, dewault has a few, etc etc....

What are the proper steps and chemicals to use? In what order do you use the products?

My paint on my truck is pretty decent, but does have the usual swirl marks that I'd like to get rid of. No major scratches of any type, just the light marks from towels and drive through car washes cause. My truck is silver in color so it may have more damage then the naked eye can see.

Also, I know there's very expensive products out there, but are any of the ones available locally good? pep boys or advanced auto?

Also, my fiance has a black car and let's just say, it's a nightware. I hate even washing it, shows every little lint and marks. Is there different steps to take on black cars? Different or better chemicals to remove scratches and swirls?

    Thanks a ton,

    Dan

i use all meguiars products i did alot of black cars last year and used the (ultimate compound) followed by the nxt tech wax it does a very good job.as for a buffer i dont use one . ido all hand wax so i can see everything as i go along. i usually buy at advanced auto its just as cheap as anywhere else and 2 miles from my house. i do a ton of cars each year and never had any complaints using these products. also what kind of towels do you use to dry your car can make a difference.

be careful and do your research before you jump right in with a buffer....alot of times they can do more damage than good. When i used to do motorcycles, we used all 3m stuff....3m buffer, 3m pads, all the 3m compounds....the stuff was amazing. car paint is a little different, but ask around and see what people use.

I think I'm gonna pick up a porter cable and do some practicing. My dad has a few older cars that I can practice on before I attempt my truck. Thanks man!

You can get the 3m perfect it at napa. Even with a cheap buffer the stuff works great.
