    update: my first buffing/waxing experience

So I started a thread few weeks back about full out detailing my truck. I've always done the normal clay/wax jobs on my cars, but wanted to learn the whole deal. So I picked up a PC along with a few other the counter applications.

I spent about 7 hours last friday doing the whole thing. First I washed with dawn dish soap to remove any and all previous wax. 2nd, I claybared it using over the counter mequire's clay kit. 3rd I used the PC and Autoglym polisher/sealent. 4th I used my favorite wax, turtle wax ice.

I read about this autoglym stuff for a few years, it's made by a company out of the UK. For years, I only ever knew it to be available from overseas, no one in the US sold it. It was pricey but like anything great, you get what you pay for. Well I walked into pepboys last thursday to get wiper blades, and to my surprise, autoglym was on the shelf for sale, $14.99 which is alot cheaper then it used to be through online orders.

    Here's a little info about it, http://www.autoglym.com/enGB/product...6VQ=HD&Range=1

Now as most polishes do, it has minor cutting agents which is fine with me, removes light swirls, cleans the paint (above what clay does), and seals the paint. I was kinda skeptic over using an "all-in-one", but I figured what the hell, it has great reviews.

I gotta say, this is like the kenne bell of car treatments. I am extremely amazed with the results. My truck paint was in good/great condition to begin with, I take care of it and clean it like it's my baby. I did have the obvious minor swirls, the kind that shine in alot of sunlight.

So after claying, I used the PC and did the entire truck according to the directions, the pad came out quite dirty, just amazing how much dirt it lifts that the naked eye can't see. After seeing the paint glisten and look amazing, i decided to hit it with one more hand coat of autoglym. Stuff drys easy and comes after great, no residue, no dusty crap like some chemicals create.

After this, I of course hit it with 2 coats of ice wax. Now everyone has there opinions on wax, but this stuff is amazing to me. It can be put all over the vehicle, plastics, chrome, etc etc. Now on a downside, the ice doesn't last more then a month or so, but for the price and how it performs, I can deal with that. The ice beads water like nothing I've ever seen, quite amazing.

I work in a large plant/factory and my truck is subject to constant dust abuse, dirt, etc etc. Fast forward a week later to today, I decided to wash the truck this morning. Every last bit of heavy mud, dirt, dust, etc etc.. washed right off. Normally my rockers and fenders have loads of little dirt and debry that won't wash off without heavy force or claying. between this autoglym and ice wax, it did an incredible job of protecting my paint.

All in all, my first full buffing experience has been great, I'm no professional but it's really alot easier then I inticipated. I would take pictures but my truck is silver/cream almost in color so pictures are about useless. But the paint in the sunlight looks like water almost, it just glistens and shines like nobodys business.

Sorry for the long right up, just excited about it all and wanted to share my experience with autoglym.

    Dan

(PS, I will be ordering some of autoglyms other products to test out, IE wax, clay, tire stuff. They only had the product mentioned above at pepboys, maybe with time they'll get more of it)

Thats awesome Dan! Finding a detailing product you have great success with is definitely something worth getting excited about, and I'm sure a lot of people will be thankful you did. I know I am lol

I did some quick searching on autoglym and found out why you you were so excited... check it out: http://autopia.org/forum/guide-detai...oval-hand.html
Quote about autoglym from the testing:
"Out of all the products tested, this one achieved the best defect removal - even deeper swirls were mostly dealt with... these were mainly filled, but as an option by hand for defect work, SRP is hard ignore. Excellent results from an underrated product, left a nice glossy finish too! :thumb: "

I need to buy more soap, I'm gonna swing by pepboys and look for this at my local one. I hope I can get the same results without a clay bar.. if so this stuff will pay off for me over the summer :)

As clean as im sure your cars are bo lol, you won't need a clay. My truck was just scattered with little dirt marks and road grime, so I HAD to clay it first. But the cutting agent in the autoglym stuff will likely work wonders in your application. If your pep boys doesn't stock it, I got it at the one in monroeville. Worst case, I'd pick you up a bottle and meet you somewhere, no biggie. Either way, yes I'm extremely happy with the results, I do read autopia like its my job, just so much info and opinions on there, it's overwelming and leaves you confused as to whats the best to get.

My truck is obviously my DD so it's never gonna be perfect. But I figure if I keep it wax once or twice a month, I'm good to go. I'll clay it and autoglym it every spring. Next weekend it's time to tackle my fiances black cobalt, it should be quite interesting. She takes care of it like an old pair of shoes, scratch and swirl mark central

PS. dont ever buy eagle one gel tire shine. It was on sale at advanced so I gave it a swing. It dried for about 2 hours in the sun, I took a short shopping trip from penn hills to monroeville, got out and it look like a black ink pen busted ALL over the sides on my truck. it's absolute GARBAGE!!!!!!!!! On my way back to advanced to grab my favorite, mequires hot shine, stuff is amazing. I've sprayed and drove immediatly, doesn't drip or cause spatter at all!

I meant this for my CC, I'd never use an all in one on my cobra even though as Joe pointed out, it was pretty gross yesterday! I just got back, and they have it so I was in luck! I really appreciate the offer though Dan!! You're too good to me! And it's funny, I was looking at tire black as well, but I'm going to wait til I finish what I have (I forget brand) and order some more, after reading your post you reminded me why. Nothing sucks more than tire black making it look like you drove over a carton of black ink pens after you drive it and wrecking all the work you put into it!!!! I can't stand that!

"First I washed with dawn dish soap to remove any and all previous wax."

Ah you dont want to use that stuff because it will pull the oils out of the paint. You want a soad that pulls all the wax/dirt off but leaves the paints oils.

    Bo,
You would be suprized how much dirt a clay bar pulls off of a clean car. When I clayed mine I about cried because I thought the old girl was clean before I started. I just clayed the front bumper and rear of the wheels because I didnt feel anything on/in the pain anywere else.

Well Bo, I was bored, just got new tires, and wanted to give the truck some loving haha. I hit the semi bad areas with clay, I did autoglym by hand, and tried a different wax I've been eying up, Nu-look once a year stuff.

As expected, just after using the autoglym, it looked so damn good, I didn't even wanna wax it. Impressions on nu-look... well the shine is NOTHING compared to what I've been using, which is the turtle wax ice. But right now, I'm going for function over form. The ice doesn't last barely a month and this nu-look says up to a year. I surely don't believe it'll last that long, but 3-6 months and i'll be happy.

Pictures are cell phone pics, and my color truck is hard to see it "pop" so-to-speak, but you get the idea. it turned out great for 3 hours non-stop work!

PS. Have you tried any new tire shines lately? I'm still in search of something that doesn't come with the ink pen mod
