Wow - what a disappointing day for Steeler fans. First thing this morning, I hear the news that Santonio Holmes was traded to the Jets for a 5th round pick. I sat back in my chair and said "wow..." I guess the Rooneys have decided to take it upon themselves to clean up their team's act. No more tolerance for #10's weed smoking and general indescretion. Part of me says this is a good move from an image standpoint for the Rooneys and the team. And another part of me wonders how we'll replace Santonio's production and the great on-field relationship he had with Ben. It didn't take long for me to realize this is probably a good move - the Rooneys have only made one serious personnel "error" in my eyes for as long as I can remember - and that was when they let Rod Woodson go. Other than that, I have found that the Rooneys are usually spot on when sending former players on their way. I have to give them the benefit of the doubt here.
Next - I wasn't upset to hear that no charges would be filed against Ben. What DID irritate me was how horrible his statement was this evening around 7pm. No emotion. No visible remorse. Just an overweight jackass reading cue cards. I've been a fan of Ben since the beginning, and have chosen to ignore the various "rumors" that I heard about him - rumors that paint him in a less-than-flattering light. His on-the-field performances have been the foundation for my opinion of him. Now, I'm finally fed up with the stupidity. The bike crash - pretty stupid. The incident in Vegas - even more stupid. This latest mess in Georgia - c'mon Ben - pull your head out of your butt!! 28 years old and LOADED beyond belief and still not an ounce of common sense in his head. And - for crying out loud - get your big butt into the gym!! He has to be pushing 300 pounds right now.
Today the Rooneys made it very clear to everyone that they are furious and completely fed up with their players - the faces of their franchise - behaving like morons - and that all of this crap will stop here and now. Look for the entire organization to be toeing the line starting now, because everyone will be held accountable.
I can't wait to hear what Goodell has to say to Ben tomorrow. It definitely won't be a proud moment for the $100 million man...
