Truth is if you are unemployed you are at a strong disadvantage as most large corporate employers use a calculus program that weights those who are currently employed or young and in school or recently graduated. If you have been unemployed for longer than a few months it is very hard to get that first interview after you apply at their website or through monster etc. it is firewall built into the new automated hiring process to cherry pick the best applicants because there are way way more applicants than available jobs. It's not like the old days when almost anyone was granted an interview for a job and given the chance to prove they are more than the sum of the points on their applications. The MO of most large corporate employers is if you are long term unemployed you are a liability and possibly a problem employee. All of this is gleaned by data without ever even meeting or interviewing the candidate. Basically, you are just a number.
