PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins say they've reached an impasse in negotiations for a new arena and will aggressively explore relocation.
The team sent a letter to Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl saying they are faced with mounting uncertainty that an agreement can soon enough for the team.
The Penguins said they will notify the NHL they are looking to relocate.
The team is declaring an impasse even though it has agreed to pay $3.6 million dollars a year in rent, plus another $400,000 a year in capital expenses.
But the Penguins say that's not enough for the state.
