    Want Smoother Shifts? Try This

I am going to post a link over to svtperformance. Its a simple mod that works on the t56 trans.

I just did this on my cobra and all i have to say is wow, the difference is crazy. I used 2 washers on mine. Some go with only 1 washer but 2 seems to be the norm. If you have any questions i can answer them here.

I saw that and really want to try it, but can you do it with the trans still in the car?

Yes. It can be done with the trans in the car. Thats how i did mine nate. I didnt have a 15/16 socket in 3/8. So i used it in half inch drive, with about 15 inches of extension and a swivel. Also i lowered the cross member to get alittle more access. If you have cats on the car it could be alittle harder i think. But even with cats there are still people doing it with the trans in the car.

I have a mgw shifter and always thought it was so notchy feeling. Almost like there was a wall between gears. This reduces that feel a ton, atleast it did for me.

Just make sure you get the right washers, thats the most important thing. Mine came from NAPA.

This mod can also be used on trans am, camaro, and corvette.

Did this mod last night. I was pretty disappointed. Thankfully I'm only out a few bucks and an hour of my time. I really didn't feel much of a difference at all. Car comes out of gear easier, but that's about it

It seems like some people have better results with this then others, Not really sure why either. What shifter do you have in the car?

I have the MGW also. It is really strange that it works for some and not others on the same trannys.

Yeah I agree that its weird that it works better for some then it does for others. But then again there are alot of variables with these cars. I mean it could have to do with clutch adjustment. Tranny fluid. just so many things that could change it.

If you have a firewall adjuster maybe mess with it alittle bit and see if you can get it anybetter. I know alot of people say to only use the regular oem tranny fluid but I switched to mobil 1 syenthic awhile back and I liked the difference it made.

    Please Help!! Tach Problem!

Hey guys. To make a long story short today i got my 5inch tach out of my foxbody and put it in my Cobra. I used the autometer tach adapter and got all the wire hooked up properly. My shift light works and the factory tach works but my autometer tach itself is stuck at 6,800 RPM which was stuck there when i pulled it out of the fox. Driving the car the needle does not move and when it was in the fox it was working. Other than calling autometer is there anything that I can try? Thanks!

Do you guys realize the damage that can be down by relieving pressure on the detent? Mine might feel notchy, but I'm not risking a 1500 trans over a 2 dollar washer

I wont say its a good idea or bad idea since i have no real evidence to support it.

I followed the thread for a few months on svtperformance as well as ls1tech and let people log over 10,000 miles before i decided to try it. As for the results on my personal car I like the mod. A few tranny guys on the forums stated that for all the more you are shimming it they would not worry about any damage.

The only ill effect they could see would be it wanting to pop out of gear, which doesnt seem to be a issue for anyone.

I know there are lots of guys that do it and swear by it. But once you see the inside of a T56 and see the shift rail is about 2 1/2 feet long, that spring is there for a reason. The rail has very minimal support on it and that shaft needs all the support it can get. And if you thrash on the car at the track (banging gears hard) you are really opening up the window for bent shift forks, rail damage, etc.

    just sayin....

You must have not seen the inside of a T-56 then. I have re-built a bunch of them. There is more support than you think.

The mod in question isnt going to hurt anything. Its just taking some pressure off the ball. A spring loaded ball that supports nothing. Actually, I know another guy that has been making lighter springs to replace the heavy spring thats in there. His has had zero problems and many many miles.

Also, the ductile iron and aluminum forks dont bend. They break. Stop scaring people over nothing. I have also replaced quite a few of those.
